Transgender Question - Chaz Bono

I do not wish to intrude but I have some questions and figured you folks would have better insight and better able to answer my questions.

I would of never had these questions if it were not for Chaz Bono's participation in Dancing with the Stars. Even though his weight hurt him I really admired his determination and attitude. Some of the dances he actually preformed decently.

My understanding is Chaz never had a penis surgery and still has a vagina. If this is so how come we are calling him a man? I personally have no issue with it as I'll call him what he wants. I guess I am thinking of the legal aspects. Does the law recognize him as a man without complete surgeries? Does the law recognize a sex change at all? If a transgender is incarcerated what sex do they get housed with? Does a drivers license reflect the birth sex or the change?

Having a penis is not the only measure of a man.

At this time there is no surgery that will provide an adequate penis for a transman. Its a goddamn motherfucking frustrating shame, but it is what it is. And the law can't require a condition that is impossible to fulfill-- of course, some states take a great deal of pleasure in doing exactly that.

The laws... are pretty fucked up. Some states might recognise him as male, some will refuse to. He will have the legal right to marry a woman according to the feds, though.

His treatment in jail is iffy, and would depend on which state he was housed in. he could be made to stay in the womens wing, and deprived of the hormones he needs to maintain his health. But everyone gets treated like shit in jail, dehumanised in whatever way the bosses can come up with.

there has been some forward movement for transgendered people who need to be recognised as such legally.
