On a slightly tangential note, as someone who has lived in Africa for a good deal of time, it is no mystery that european invaders made a concerted effort to erase African history. I sometimes find it funny how surprised and skeptical peopl are to this idea, and how blind the majority of the occidental (did that offend anyone?) academic community is to its evidence.

The reason for it is unclear, although theories including the idea that it would be easier to subjugate a people without a strong sense of history and civilization, and others as simple as jealousy (Napoleon's armies disfiguring the sphinx is a good example of this) are all pretty plausible.

Talking about the value of cultures other than this one is something like a fish swimming around trying to explain to other fish what it would feel like to be dry - our environment is so saturated with "Western" culture, the facts about other cultures are seen in the context of "Western" cultural thinking and therefore even the presentation of those facts is tainted. So for as long as I am living in this country (which will not necessarily be for the rest of my life), I remain the proverbial "fish out of water".

Howard makes me think. I didn't know he'd gotten the short of of the stick in a divorce settlement (which is not surprising, given the laws here).

I was speaking tongue in cheek when I called him a "dominate" master. It was a poke at several things, one of which is the hidden sex resentments and underlying feelings of powerlessness which I believe to provide the mojo to much of BDSM.

On the other hand, he IS a master of sorts-an immensely powerful media figure-and is in an excellent position to revenge himself upon what he sees as the scorning bimbos of the world. This power- wielded by a man who must surely on an inner level see himself as the powerless high school geek-is the key to his appeal.

Ok, I know this is ridiculous, but this is driving me crazy. Unless I am mistaken, the word "dominate" is a transitive verb. The word "dominant" is an adjective. You cannot be a dominate. You can be a dominant. You cannot dominant someone. You can dominate someone.

Sorry to be nitpicky, but I have seen this malapropism throughout the board and we're beginning to sound like a bunch of Bush's in our own field.
