Too good for porn?

Have you ever started on a bit of smut writing, and decided that it would be better as a "proper" story?

It's not that I think some things too good for porn, but that I've realized that in some of them, the sex had turned into a distraction rather than a bonus. Over-emphasis on the sex scenes distorted the piece as a whole and directed the reader's attention away from other important issues.

But then, I suppose that that depends on one's definition of "porn." I think most texts can handle erotic moments if they are integrated well into the whole, but if by "porn" we mean "a text whose primary purpose is sexual stimulation," then perhaps you're right. There are things I've written that I don't wish readers to see primarily in that light.

Probably why I keep getting those "needs more sex" feedbacks.

That's what happens to me too. I definitely need more sex.

That's not it, I just think you need more sex. :D

Joking aside, I know what you mean, and what I do in those cases is try to re-integrate the sex back into the story. It's not always easy to do, but using the sexuality of the characters to move the plot forward, is a clever trick!

Valid point. I've had to do that a couple of times myself.

Yes to your original query; it's why I've not submitted anything to Lit. in some time.

However, I am surprized at how sex occurs more often in my 'proper' writing. (Now I just need it in my real life.)

No, but I cannot tell you the amount of "proper stories" I've attempted to write which turned to smut. In fact, I've never finished a non-erotic story.

I write the story first and then decide how I'll publish it. :)

My prose is all smut-laden, but, with the exception of a couple unapologetically prurient vignettes, it is always my intention to write a proper story, complete with my very own brand of paltry social commentary. In my case, it's only lack of skill, and not the mutual exclusivity of smut and literature, which stands in the way of my pulling it off.

No, but I've had porn stories that I've since decided that I could make 'proper'!

I don't differentiate between them.

Right. I just tell the story. If it includes sex, fine. If not, fine.

Do I want to write stories which don't contain sex? No, but it happens.

I think erotica can be "proper", and hope to one day be published in the mainstream arena such as Rice with her Sleeping Beauty and such. Heck, even a lot of early King was erotic as well. ;)

yup. that's the beauty of writing, you can let your mind wander into places you didn't intend to go

In my case, it tends to go round to a neighbours house, but it usually comes home after a few days, with a guilty expression. It never tells me what it's been up to.

Send it to me sometime. (I won't smoke when it's in the room.)

that's wise. I've seen the little lable;
"Warning, highly flammable. Do not expose to open flame."
