If I really think about the time I spend stimulating myself compared to the time I use racing to the finish line, I'd guess I probably edge about 98 percent of the time. The orgasm is intense and satisfying and then I can get a few things accomplished at home before the urge for more stimulation creeps back again.

Edging is usually prolonged multiple near orgasms stretched out from as little as an hour to as much as a few weeks.
Yes in theory backing off once is technically edging, but you need to get right to the point of orgasm and able to stop it multiple times before you really experience the glory of edging.
Not silly at all for those who do it.

I first heard the term edging in this context about twenty years ago, when I was taught how to do it for a man. And I don't remember the source now, but I I recall seeing it in a book published in the 70s or 80s. It was used with respect to a technique for helping men overcome premature ejaculation (I was researching sexual dysfunction for a paper for my college psych class).
No offense, but perhaps what is really silly is to assume the usage of a term is new because one has not heard that usage before.

I get this exactly.
