Three Rocks Woods (Open)

The two women scurried away, trying to be quiet, mostly succeeding. So quiet in fact that they could hear an undescribable sound...if the girls didn't know better, they would have thought it was the sound of something eating the two fallen bodies. But then there were other noises too, footsteps...sounding human...maybe...out there in the dark.

Lauren

"Do you have your keys? Do you think your car will start?" Lauren whispers as she looks around, trying to be invisible.

"Otherwise, we are on foot and need to keep going until we can kind a safe place to hide."

"Yeah I have my keys. Lets try it but Im not sure how far we can go. Has your phone gotten any signal. Try texting someone." Drea looked at Lauren as they scurried over to Dreas car. She climbed in the front seat then locked the doors once Lauren got inside the car. Drea turned the key and thanked god when the car started. She put the car in drive then floored the gas pedal heading in the same direction that they had been heading in while on foot. " Lauren.........what do you think is going on?"

Lauren

Lauren holds her breath as Drea tries to start her car.

"Drea, I have no idea what's going on beyond the fact it scares the shit out of me. I don't want to think about it, I want to get away from it. I want to go home." She forces a smiles, "Maybe all the way back to Boston."

The phones did not work. Not only didn't get a signal, but didn't come on at all. The car was no dice...no dome light, no chug-chug-chug as the engine vainly tried to start.

Nothing.

Other than the red glow and the stars in the sky, there were no lights. Nothing electronic worked. For the girls, it was like being back in the Stone Age, only with big glass and plastic props like cars.

Lauren

She silently curses.
"Come on, hun. Do you have anything in the car we might be able to use? Get it quick and lets go."

She waits for Drea "We need to find someplace to hide."

As soon as Drea pushed the gas pedal the car died just like Laurens had. " Fuck..........What the hell is going on. My cell wont even turn on and I charged it before I left. Looks like we're back on foot." Drea mumbled something about killing Jenny and the pledges when she got back to the house. She climbed out of the car, not really too worried about what was happening. Drea was already scared shitless of the dark and this just made it better so she working off of pure anger right now

Lauren

Lauren grabs for Drea's arm after they climb back out of the car.
"We need to move quickly but quietly. We have to stay off the road or we will be easily spotted."

Lauren runs her hair through her hair. "After we put some distance between us and whatever is going on, we need to stop and think. Short term - run, long term - plan." She gives Drea's arm a squeeze, "We can do this."

She just wished she believed her own words.

Drea glanced over at her and nodded some, " Sorry but this is really getting to me. But you're definitely right. Lets keep heading in the same direction and after about a mile or so we can stop and think about what to do." She looked at Lauren and sighed slightly as they started walking parallel to the road again. Drea wondered who that person was back there and why they had shot themselves

The two girls began their dash. As they pulled away from the car, they left the red glow of the dying flares behind them, along with those sounds. The horn blew again, not seeming quite so close.

Drea was the first to have her eyes adapt to the darkness. There was, in fact, a little bit of light, a ruddy, pale glow. It was coming from the moon--

--but not the moon the two women had grown up seeing.

This moon was larger, yellowish. It looked vaguely like Tattooine from Star Wars. It was about one-third illuminated, but both women could tell it was not the familiar gray, pockmarked moon that rightfully belonged in the sky.

Lauren

As the quietly scurry along, the girls stay close to together. Lauren notices Drea look up to the moon and her eyes follow up to the ...

"Ah Christ, what the fuck is going on?" This is wrong, the moon is wrong, the car should work - everything should work but nothing does... arrows and guns...

"Shit. just shit. What is happening?" She asks herself, not expecting an answer, for herself or Drea.

She shakes her no. "Questions later, moving now."

Her heart races and her breath comes hard and heavy as she tries to stem the rising panic.

Drea looked at Lauren then pushed her a little bit to get her to snap out of it. " Dont you let this get to you now. Do you hear me? This is a fucked up and very wrong situation. We both now that but we can make it out of this. I think we need to head perpendicular to this road because we've gone down this way in your car and we ended up at the dirt road right? So obviously this road gets us nowhere but there has to be a road the runs perpendicular to it because thats the only way we got to this road." Drea looked at Lauren and just nodded some as if she was trying to her convince herself of the plan.

Lauren

Lauren nods, "I know, hun. We have to keep moving because we sure as hell don't want to stay here." She takes a deep breath and steadies herself.

Lauren kept moving along side Drea but her mind kept racing back to the strange things they had seen and heard. She could find no reason, no explaination, no pattern. She was thinking in circles and just couldn't stop.

Drea thought some while looking around a bit then she blinked some, was that the shape of a house she saw or were her eyes playing tricks on her. " Lauren, look a house. I think we need to head in the complete opposite direction of that house."

Lauren Cabot

"A house? Are you sure?"

Laure peers into the darkness, "I don't see anything. But if there is a house, shouldn't we ask.... no. Nevermind." She frowns, "Which way?"

In the near-dark of the wilderness night, Drea couldn't tell whether it was a house, or some other landmark, or a pile of stones, or--

But she could see the shapes, silhouetted against the stars, coming toward them. Human...except for a few who were riding things that were not horses. The horn sounded again, much closer. In the night, the women could hear footsteps, and the sounds other other things moving in the night...larger things, coming their way.

"Lauren we have to run. This walking and being quiet isnt working obviously. It doesnt matter how quiet we are, those things are going to find us and they are going to probably kill us." Drea looked at Lauren then thought for a moment before turning her body so she was at a 90 degree angle with the road but facing in the opposite direction of the house thing. " We need to head in this direction. This is the way we have to go."

Lauren Cabot

Nodding, she grabs for Drea's hand and breaks into a flat out run, "Christ, hun. We've got to go."

She isn't sure what she saw, but she knows she doesn't want a closer look.

Drea willingfully runs alongside Lauren as fast as she can. She had no idea what Lauren had saw but Drea sure as hell did not want to see it. "Lauren this should be the way back to the city but god only knows how far out here we are." She looked over at Lauren with a somewhat panicked look but she kept her cool mostly

The girls couldn't be sure, but it looked like the main mass of humans and whatever they were riding was veering off to the left, away from them. The horn sounded, lower this time. The noises of pursuit declined, and the girls could hear the sound of a benign breeze waft across the eerily-lit landscape.

Until a sudden noise came from the immediate right. Something--two somethings--crashed through the brush. They snarled yet walked on two legs. Well, ran actually. Both women were tackled by the man-things...they had noses that were vaguely snout-like, with small tusks. Their skin was greenish. They were about six and a half feet tall, almost all of it muscle. Their hands ended in claws.

Lauren

Lauren screamed as the creatures broke through the brush, "Drea, run!"

Lauren tried to flee but hesitated when she saw her friend knocked down. It wasn't long before she was on the ground, tackled too. Although the wind was nearly knocked out of her, terror loaned fury to her fists. She struggled to break free, to get back to her feet. Her strong legs kicked and her fists punched at the hideous green beast.

Drea screamed as loud as she could and started to beat the monster with her hands as hard as she could. She remember that she had a put a wrench in her purse, as she beat the monster with one hand, her other hand searched the ground. Finally she found the wrench and started to beat the monster with both the wrench and her fist

Both girls could tell the "monsters" were humanoid...at a level of abstraction, their body shape was human--two legs, two arms, a head, two eyes. It was the details where they differed. A snoutish nose rather than a human one. Larger mouths, more elongated, with tusks. Rougher body features...almost like the products of a sculptor who had tried to mimic the human form but didn't quite have the talent to pull it off.

And green skin. And hands that ended in claws rather than fingernails. The creatures' bare chests had odd markings on them. Patterned scars. They wore crude loincloths. And as they fought, Drea and Lauren found the creatures also had an understanding of metallurgy...for there were knives at the womens' throats.

Lauren

Lauren's body stilled and she was motionless under the knife at her throat. Afraid to move she called out for her friend in a voice as calm as she could manage under the circumstances, "Drea? You still with me, sister?"

She swallowed hard, her fear making even that simple act difficult, and she was breathless from her panicked exertions. She didn't know what to do or say but she knew if the creature had wanted her dead, she would be dead.

Drea dropped the wrench and just up at the creature then glanced over in Laurens direction, " Yeah Im ok. You ok?" She looked up at the monster then made a disgusted face, " What do you want with us?"
