Three Rocks Woods (Open)

Drea definitely knew it was a form of French but she couldnt understand very much of it. It seemed that Lauren and Drea were sent into the "alternate reality" with some substantial advantages. Drea was a survivor, putting her best foot forward and she was fluent in French and Russian. Lauren was very smart with chemicals and such things. With Trent on their side they might just do ok in this place. " So you've meet the locals? Were they hostile or friendly? The two we saw were definitely not hostile but something was after them and it was using a bow and arrow." Drea just shrugged slightly and sat down on a rock with a sigh.

Lauren

"Hm...I'll need to see their current developement and the available resources, if nothing else we should be able to supplement their defenses with the proper application modern thinking."

Trent nodded. "If I had been given even, say twelve hours to prepare for this little excursion, I'd have brought some books, some equipment, and the Schmeisser I have in my basement. But if wishes were horses... If this were a Hollywood action movie--or hell, even an Edgar Rice Burroughs novel--we the heroes would save civilization here, set up an industrial economy, mass-produce firearms, drive the savage orcs back to their jungle lairs or wherever they came from. We'd be quite the good colonialists.

"But the reality is there's three of us, we have no machinery, and between us a couple years of college chemistry. Even if we brought advanced technology, it wouldn't work. That';s the foible of advanced civilizations. All the machinery requires equally advanced technicians and other machinery making spare parts somewhere else. It's all connected.

And I don't know if I'd want to even if I could. Maybe this place deserves to stay wild. Clean air and water. No Cold War. The way Reagan talks, Earth is going to have World War III any day now. I don't know if that's worse than orcs or not."

Lauren

Lauren shakes her head, "You've got it all wrong, except for the horses, a draft animal would be invaluble but otherwise you are thinking too large, too big. The smallest changes can make the biggest difference. A more efficient arrow, a better designed crossbow and bolt or a superior building material for walls and protection, things that will increase offensive and defensive capabilities without making significant changes in the enviorment or the inhabitants way or life...."

She trails off.... "I am sorry, it is an interest of mine...and I can get a little carried away."

Drea nods while listening to Trent, she had to agree with him. They may have the smarts but they dont have the tools or machines to use those smarts. " There must be something that we are missing here though." Drea shook her head some then stood up and started to wander around the rock area but never straying too far from where LAuren and Trent where

"When we get back to my hideout, I'll show you what I brought with me. It ain't much. But next I want to try this spot about three miles to the north. It's in orc territory, but I notice my compass points toward it. I'm wondering if it's a gateway point. I also noticed the last two times I synched, there was lightning nearby."

Hey I gotta run for like 30 minutes. I have to run out and get my roommate chocolate lol

She nods, "Anomolies need to be explored as possible routes home, but if it means entering Orc..." she shakes her head, she can't believe what she is about to say. "Orc held territory, preparations should be made first, we'll need a plan. A good good one."

"How much contact do you have with the humans? How advanced is their technology... if Drea can talk to them, we may be able to learn a lot before we venture into more dangerous territory."

Drea nodded some and looked at them both, " I should be able to pick up on their language rather fast. Im already fluent in French so I should be able to fill in the blanks. Perhaps they know more about whats going but first we need some new clothes." She looked at Lauren then walked over to her with a small smile. " See we are going to be fine."

Trent smiled darkly. "I'd feel better if my hideout were fortified with a contingent of Marines on watch, complete with a recoilless .50-caliber to take out those Wargs. This world is like the ocean, ladies--never turn your back on it." That horn sounded again, far away this time. "I fucking hate that sound. It always means the orcs are about to start something. From here you can see the human settlement, at least in the day. At night there's no electricity, so no lights--at least none bright enough to see from here."

Drea looked out into the darkness then looked at Trent, " Perhaps we should get moving? I really dont want to hear that horn getting closer to us." She walked over to Trent and stared at him for a minute then she looked around some. " Once we get to your hide out of whatever Ill try and decipher what I heard the woman screaming and we need to figure out a way to make more weapons." She nodded some.

Lauren

At the sound of the horn Lauren becomes restless and eager to be on the move. Suddenly, their quiet little place no longer quite so safe. She is quickly on her feet and ready to move. She looks at Drea and gives her a reassuring smile.

"Ready, love?" Now that Lauen has given herself a list of questions to be answered and things to do, she is finding it much easier to keep herself calm and under control. She is uncertain how long that will last if the Orcs come back so she tries not to think in that direction.

She turns to Trent. "Which way now?"

Trent looked out at the darkness. "We need to move down the other side of this rock here, through the forest, then out into another clearing. Past the clearing is my hideout. It's in a cave." He got up, and looked around. "This way."

Lauren

Lauren nods, ready to move on. She is eager to put distance between them and the sound of the horn, to get as far away from the Orcs as possibe. She knows she needs to find a safe, place or at least a safer place, to think.

She smiles at her friend, uncertain if it will be seen in the dark but she hopes her best friend, her sister, knows she is here for her and that together, they will make it through this. She even spares a thought for Trent, she knows nearly nothing about him except how much they owe him.

Drea smiles back at Lauren and squeezes her arm some, " We're going to be ok." She looked at Trent and smiled a little more then she thought about how Lauren and her owed him their lives. "We have to survive ok?"

Trent led the women through the forest. The going was slow, for there was almost no light, and there was undergrowth aplenty. But the smell of the forest air was intoxicating...pure and lush, fresh air. Looking up where there were clear spots was a dazzling multitude of stars, unhindered by skyglow, untrammeled by airplanes or satellites.

The band came to a clearing. "This is it," Trent said. "On the other side is the cave."

Lauren

Lauren stopped dead in her tracks, awe-stuck by the beauty before her eyes.

"Its lovely." she whispered. "And so sad that such horrible monsters could run free in such a beautiful land."

The city girl in Lauren was both inspired and intimidated the lovely land and its beauty. She wished she had a camera so she could perserve the sight forever but all she had was her cell-camera and she knew it wouldn't work...

Drea looked up at the sky and blinked some. The sight was absoluetly amazing and beautiful. " Wow, this place has its advantages huh?" She looked to Trent with a smile then she looked at Lauren with a bigger smile.

The trio set foot into the clearing. The ground was soft, summer grass they could tell. They got halfway across when Drea spied little reddish lights at the far end. There were more off to the right.

Torches...moving toward the three. Then came the horn, louder than ever, echoing across the valley with a ghastly cadence.

"I think they found us," Trent said, pulling the Magnum from his pocket.

Lauren

Lauren's jaw tightened, and she spoke calmly through her clenched teeth, "Perhaps if we move quickly, we can lose them..." Her tone is hopeful, she knows nothing of these creatures or their abilities and is willing to wish they are slow moving, lousy trackers.

"We should keep going, if there is more then a couple of them your gun won't make that big of a dfference, we'll just be overwhelmed."

She turns to check Drea's reaction to the latest turn of events...

Drea kept her calm and looked to Trent then to Lauren. " We need to double back that way all they have to go on is the old scent trail." She was frantically thinking of something to do to help them in this situation

While the girls were talking, the torches suddenly surged toward them, bobbing reddish-yellow lights that brightened steadily.

"Run," Trent said simply, and then took his own advice, fleeing back the way he came, beckoning for the women to follow. He looked back and saw they were gaining. "I think they're seeing infrared," Trent whispered. "We're fucked. If we split up some of us might lose them. Or we could surrender. I doubt they'll kill us--they want humans alive."

Drea ran next to Trent and made sure Lauren was in toe, " How cold was that creek we had to swim through? We might be able to lay at the bottom of the creek." She looked at Trent as they ran as fast as they could. She really did not want to seperate from Lauren and Trent

Lauren

To Lauren there is no choice, it is run. As long as it is possible, they must try get away. She doesn't want to think about surrender and what it would mean. S

"We can't just give up, we have to try to get away." She grabs Drea's arm and tries to pull her along, running as fast as she can. "We will stay together."
