The problem is, you can't use profiling to predict a crime that hasn't happened yet! The case of police profiling you sited is looking for a person of a specific description in a small area. We don't know what terrorists look like. I can think of a dozen scenarios of future terrorist attacks that all the racial profiling in the world won't stop...and I'm sure the terrorists have thought of them too. Expect the next attack to be perpetrated by a non-Arab Muslim...

Timothy McVeigh aside, virtually all of the terrorist events over the past 20 years have been perpetrated by men of middle eastern descent.

I'd also argue that friends and associates of Mr. McVeigh and those that participate in groups similar to his are all being watched very closely also.

I agree to a degree. It will be difficult to completely prevent future terrorism. But, that doesn't preclude us from taking reasonable precautions.

Actually, there's quite a long list of terrorist activities that have been perpetrated by this demographic. About 6 months ago I saw a list that included major terrorist activities world-wide and the list was several pages long and was 95% dominated by Arab Terrorists.

An interesting story, but irrelevant (btw, the professor was wrong; a minority that lives in poverty and suffers discrimination and prejudice is going to have a higher incidence of crime than a majority that doesn't); as JM pointed out, there is a difference between reactive and proactive profiling - the former can work, the latter rarely does, the former does not generally infringe on people's rights, the latter almost always does.

Devil's Advocate here...the U.S. military(and America in general) is supposed to be better than Iraq, right? We expect that America keeps better records of their weapons, but I know FOR A FACT that we have lost and misplaced weapons, ammunition, and even people. I wonder how many explosive weapons would be unaccounted for on paper in the U.S. if we did an inventory?
I know of a case where a Marine was smuggling out M-16s and grenades to sell on the black market for years before someone noticed that they were missing.
This isn't a smoking gun(although I would like to see Saddam Hussein out of Iraq)

Race issues aside.....I'd say "profiling" in response to a specific crime or threat constitutes good police work.

I'm not arguing the effectiveness. Regardless of how effective it is, I find it morally wrong, and against the best interests of us as Americans.

Also... I asked specifically about the comparison between oklahoma city and the trade center... each only happened once. I wasn't asking about other terrortist attacks perpetrated by muslims or arabs.

That's a sociology question, not a law enforcement issue then.

I agree insofar as poverty and discrimination are concerned and that we should do everything we can to ensure equal opportunity to move towards the "colorblind" society that MLK advocated.

I still think that its' prudent to screen those people that are going to be involved in this "symbolic" event (the Super Bowl) that fit profiles from recently past terrorist activities. After all, we still are "at war" with Al Quaeda.
