The Weekly Weigh-in Thread.

GGRRRR I had a blood test and my cholesterol is 7.7 mmol/l - should be less than 5.5. Two years ago it was, don't know what's happened since then. In fact I have lost some weight and am doing more exercise than I was when I had the first test - go figure

Doc wants to check it again in 3 months, and I might have to go on medication if it's no better. I could cut down on red meat and eggs, and eat more fish and chicken, but that's about all I can see in my diet that I can change - I already eat wholegrain bread, I don't eat sweet biscuits, I don't eat a lot of cheese......

My cholesterol is higher when I am thinner, and a vegan! The ratio of the good to the bad is more important than the total number itself. I got heavier and started eating 2 eggs/day and it went down from 390 to 230. I did the medication years ago, it didn't make much of a difference, not like getting heavier and eating eggs did.

The LDL (bad) cholesterol is twice as high as the HDL (good) cholesterol. Triglycerides are slightly too high as well at 2.2 (should be less than 2.0). The good news is the coronary risk ratio is 3.5 (>5.0 is bad).

I will work on it over the next 3 months and see what happens. If anyone has some good ideas on how to lower cholesterol please let me know, Master Gil is on meds and His is good

P.S. I eat two eggs a day too maybe that's the problem lol! But I've always eaten plenty of eggs.........

Apparently oatmeal helps with not only lowering cholesterol but to keep you full longer and its healthyish.

Some ways to lower your cholesterol: use olive oil or canola oil versus other oils (cooking, salad dressings, etc). Do more soluble fiber. Soluble fiber may help lower blood cholesterol levels. It is found in oats, rice, bran, barley, dried peas and beans, and certain fruits like prunes and apples. Avoid the term "partially hydrogenated vegetable oil" on the ingredient list of margarines, as well as packaged foods, cookies and crackers. When it comes to meat, here is the order from best to worst – fish, chicken, red meat. Fish protein is the best because it contains the least amount of fat, but chicken is also very good. Try to avoid red meat as much as possible; it’s recommended to eat red meat at the most once a week. Fish rich in Omega-3 fatty acids, is good for cholesterol. It is recommended to eat at least 6-8 ounces of baked or broiled fish each week. Salmon, mackerel, tuna, and halibut are excellent sources. Eggs are fine but you should not eat more than one whole egg a day. If you normally eat more than one egg, use egg whites and substitute. The yolk of an egg has close to the amount of daily cholesterol allotted (one large egg has 212 of the 300/daily allotment). Flax seeds ground up and tossed into a meal is another great source. Flaxseed is the best plant source of omega-3 fatty acids (the healthy type of polyunsaturated fat). It also contains both soluble and insoluble fiber. I do mine in yogurt.

You don't smoke if I remember right (which raises cholesterol), you have already lost weight and are exercising regularly - so you are doing those things already.

I had just done a bunch of research for a girlfriend whose medication regimen increased her cholesterol. It was interesting to find out that being close to that menopause age also could increase it. Also if your parents had issues, the likely hood you will to.

Now I'm on a plateau. They are natural and expected, but they suck donkey dicks. A good long bike ride might help. If nothing else, it will clear my mind.

Well the last couple days I guess I have been fluctuating between 156 and 157 so doin ok so far.

I had plateaued over the winter, of course I was a bit of a slug who dislikes the cold.

Now I'm back to loosing a pound a week.

yeah!!

Oh...and I take my hat off (well have already done that as you can see by my AV change)...any way I take my hat off to all who make the effort to improve their health.

I remember last year having a plateau at this very weight. Today was a good day. I'll bust it soon.

I'm worried about my friend on the local board. He has lost over 40 pounds this year, but has stalled around 290. I'm afraid if he quits he'll gain it all back and then some. Being that overweight the odds are against him. I think people get spoiled with early success, and then discouraged when they can't keep the same pace. Plus, that's 40 pounds his muscles don't have to carry, so he may be losing muscle at the same time which is not good.

40 pounds in a year is great! I would hope he reminds himself of that accomplishment and know that his body is just getting use to the weight change. I know I have to keep reminding myself the same thing. I get discouraged at the constant stall (we all like that instant gratification of seeing the scale move). Then I step back, remind myself I have lost 20 pounds in 5 months, dropped 2 sizes in clothes, and not really feeling like I am "on a diet".

Good job on doing all of the exercises WD!

I'm worried about him. He's starting to rationalize things. Like saying his goal for the year was 50 pounds and he's almost reached it. I told him a month ago that it was going to get hot which makes it harder to exercise and he welcomed it. Saying it would help him lose weight. Well, he hates exercise. All he was doing was walking 30 minutes a day. Now that is getting boring to him.

I love the heat. I was a summer baby in the pre-AC world. But still I have a history of giving up in the summer. I can't let that happen this year.

At last I'm at a new low after 7 long days. With any luck I'll be within 5 pounds of last years weight by Mother's Day. And in the 180s by my birthday.

My progress is nil. It might help if I tried at all! I am going to have to switch workouts because I just got a helix piercing in my ear and you can't go in a chlorinated pool for a while. Tomorrow I will probably do at least 30 mins on the exercise bike downstairs. I don't think I've exercised in like a week or more.

Exercise is a dirty word. I think we're better off with the goal of just being more active. With variety. Find 3 or 4 things you like to do and mix it up.

This looks like another thread that I can slot into like a dime into a pinball mashine.
I'm travelling to Canada for a 4 week holiday in exactly 12 months and I'd really like to be a size 14 to 16 by then. (not sure what size that is in other parts of the world.)
I actually have to drop quite a few dress sizes to be that slim.
This looks like a good place to post when I really need TLC or when I want to have a general bitch about how much 'everything sux.'
I hate to exercise: but I've decided to walk (at night), ride my exercise bike while I watch TV and do dance arobics in my bedroom.

Yea noone likes to use the word exercise.... I like the sounds of toning up... Sounds like you are actually doing something important and unique instead of just exercising like everyone else.

I have noticed my body composition is changing. For the better. Sometimes I get too hung up on numbers.

How is everyone doing now that we are finally getting some warm spring like weather?

I finally lost a pound - it took 3 weeks to do so but hey I lost it. Now it would be nice to see another one drop before the end of the month but I am not holding my breath.

Not so good. I just got back from my sister's where eating is a sport.

Great support thread. I have lost a pound recently. I've lost 19 pounds since August of last year. I got off track for a while unfortunately. I hope to lose another 20 this year since I'm back on track and exercising much more, but I'm concentrating on being healthy and not necessarily losing weight. Whenever I think "Oh God I must lose this much weight in this amount of time" it never happens and then I splurge and gain weight usually.

Anyway, good luck to you all on your efforts.

I would love to join - think this thread is a great idea!

I was diagnosed last year with a thyroid condition - lost 20 pounds quickly and then another 20 slowly. Now I've hit a plateau that's lasted pretty much 6 months (have only lost about 1 pound a month since January. Went from 213 to 167, which is now where I'm stuck. Currently size 12 bottom, 14 top.

I was exercising very rigorously (2+ hours per day) for about 2 months but became discouraged because I wasn't losing weight, even though it had a good impact my BP and figure/inches. Haven't exercised except for daily walking for 2 weeks now. Diet is also normally pretty good but have been eating sweets again for the first time in a very long time.

Am hoping that by joining this thread, it will push me to "stick with it." Can't blame it on my thyroid right now as that seems to be normal....

Welcome to the thread Neon and very glad to see you back around! Sounds like your body is just in a plateau for now but I bet you shift again soon as long as your diet and exercise regime continues along. :)
