My college alma mater just lost their head coach, Dennis Erickson, to the San Francisco 49'ers of the NFL. Traitor...I feel sorry for all those recruits that he assured that he would be at Oregon State U for the next five years. OK, this Beav alum is off his soapbox. AA

LOL.... well he should have stayed in Oregon.. Good college coaches don't always do so well in the pros Erickson certainly didn't do so well leading the Seahawks.... amazed me that the 49er's would pay him so much...

and welcome AA...

Thanks for the welcome. And the coach before him, Mike Riley, went out the same way...coached the San Diego Chargers for 3 years before getting the axe. NOW, he wants to be considered again for the OSU job...go figure! LOL

Mr "Knock it off!" (I'm a head case)--Ryan Leaf. The University of Oregon just signed his little brother Brady to a letter of intent--he is also a quarterback. Rotsa Ruck, Coach Belotti. :D

Well lets hope he learned something from watching all the mistakes his big brodder made.... but somehow I doubt it... :(

Ummm... anyone else think the Lakers are running scared???

How long can Kobe Bryant hold up the team? 51 pt's last night was pretty impressive... but he can't do it alone... or can he?

I heard two interesting stories on the radio on my way home from work....

1: there is a movement in the Big 10 to force colleges to pay football players a stipend. Apparently this is a attempt to keep college players for all 4 years and limit the infulence of big supporters who dish out money to star players under the table... In theory I think its a good thing.... but I still don't think it will work... they couldn't keep a star from turning pro before he had used up his eligibility since they certainly could not give the players a fraction of what they would make in the pro's... but at the same time I think the NCAA has to come to their senses and realize that college players are really hired guns...even the Olympic movement realizes that in all the high profile sports there are no amatures... and maybe all the silly witch hunts of college teams and the penalities would just go away... only a few get caught... and have to pay the price.... I think the NCAA just penalizes enough schools to keep the "illusion" that college is for amatures... It's time to forget that nonsense...

2: 19 states now impose a special income tax on all pro atheletes who come into their states to play a game... for someone like A Rod that means $10,000/game he plays in Minnesota... Now I don't feel sorry for A Rod or any of the other big bucks guys... but this also extends to coaches, and trainers and others the teams bring with them. Aside from the nightmare of filling out all those tax forms it strikes me as totally unfair... people who go into those states to work for a few days are not taxed on what their companies pay them while they are there.... why should only the atheletes and the team managements pay?... I know just about all the states are hurting right now and looking to improve revenue ... but isn't this taxation without representation?... didn't our forefathers dump large quantities of Tea into Boston harbour over this?... Have we all just gotten jaded... or do they just resent pro atheletes?

hi soft,

first, you don't need the baketballs. your av is just fine the way it is

second about the states thing. that's been around for a few years now. i think 5. and If I remember right, i think it was memphis (then vancouver) grizzles stayed and extra 2 days in the US so they didn't have to pay resident taxes because they weren't there long enough

Welcome Otter.... :)

Well the taxes thing was new to me... I still think its a totally unfair way to raise revenue... and this is from a sports nut who thinks all pro's make way too much money...

So how far will San Fancisco fall now that erikson is the coach ?

What the hell where they thinking.........

Hi sweet, just had to pop in and say hi. Golf and skating are two of my favorites as well. And then add hockey and college football (Nebraska).

Well it gratifying to find some other sports fans out there....I am glad you all came... have some fun folks...

I love my UCLA teams (just not this year). I used to be a Rams fan... until they moved to St. Louis.... I still bleed Dodger Blue here myself.... and as for Hockey, we just won't mention the Kings this year... LOL ;)

The only pro sports team we have here is the Portland Jailblazers and during football season the networks jam those worthless Seattle Seasquawks down our throats...yuck. I am an old San Diego Chargers fan from way back...still like watching them. I want to come down to LA and take in a Dodger game at Chavez Ravine this year. Only time I have been in LA is changing planes at LAX and want to spend some time there on vacation. As far a Kobe and Shaq go, if one of them gets injured then their chances of a 4-peat go down the tube--otherwise, they have a good shot at it.

That tax is ludicrous...I do believe they need to put a cap on the salaries because it is getting impossible for the average fan to afford to see a sports event. OK--AA is off his soapbox for now,

LOL I know what you mean about the prices Always Awake... not to mention what they gouge you here for a hot dog and a beer.... a beer at the Staples Center is like $6.00.... They want to tear down Dodger Stadium to build one with lots of luxury boxes...I hate the luxury boxes... even if I could afford one, I think I would rather be in a regular box with the rest of the hoi poloi... I think Dodger Stadium is one of the most beautiful in all sports... It sits down in this nice little ravine... you can actually see brush covered hills in the distance... and it has always been so well managed and clean... (well it was when the O'Malley family ran the show here.... I haven't been since they sold out.).... any way I am for the regular Joe fan ...they should want to keep us happy for a change ... we are the ones who are there season thru season win or lose.... I miss the O'Malley's.. they were the last class act in Base ball...

I agree that the O'Malley's were a class act and doubt if there will be any ownership that can match them--ever! Went to a Blazer game versus the Lakers recently at the Rose Garden, I will itemize the tab. (Paul Allen is the owner (partner of Bill Gates)and thinks all of the fans are rolling in dough.) Parking $12; Game Ticket (nosebleed seats) $35; Nacho-$4.25; Beer $5.50--a grand total of $56.75 for ONE person. God forbid if you have a family. I go to MAYBE two Blazer games a year, but watch junior hockey--Portland Winterhawks--whenever I can. The Kings have a former Hawk, Adam Deadmarsh, and the Ottawa Senators have Marian Hossa--2nd in the league in goals. There are about 20 Winterhawks in the NHL now. The nice part is that I can see a good hockey game for about 10 bucks...still get my nacho and beer and be under 20 bucks.

Now thats sounds like a fun evening.. Not likely to see that in LA... even arena football is about $ 20.00 a seat... and still have the Staple Centers prices for everything else... I read somewhere that the NFL did a survey of cities who could support a pro football team... LA is # 1, but Portland is #2.... and since we don't seem inclined here to build a new stadium for football I bet you get an expansion team before we do here... I love Adam Deacmarsh.... hes one of the few bright spots of the Kings this year...

Portland is trying to get a Major League Baseball team and a NHL franchise. NHL has a reasonable shot in the Rose Garden, but the refurbished PGE park is in downtown Portland with NO parking lot (or parking close to the stadium), max capacity of about 35,000, and poor management. Guess I will have to keep taking road trips to Seattle (about 2 1/2 hour drive up I-5) to watch the Mariners because without a new stadium....baseball will never come to the Rose City...the Portland Beavers are the AAA farm club for the San Diego Padre's and that is likely as close as we will get.

Maybe you should try and talk the Expo's into moving south.... the don't seem to get anywhere close to 35,000 in that big ol masoleum they call a stadium up there....
apologies to Canadian lurkers... but really baseball is not your game, n'est ce pas? ;)
