I've had raging insomnia for the last fortnight, and need as many ideas as I can get, folks :rose:

1. How many hours' sleep do you get on average each night?
2. What's your ideal bed time?
3. What's your ideal waking up time?
4. Would you consider yourself to have sleeping problems?
5. Do you sleep with the window open or closed?
6. How do you wind down for the night?
7. What things have the potential to keep you awake at night, or disrupt your sleep?
8. What do you do if you can't sleep?
9. What position do you sleep in?
10. Do you rely on anything to give you a restful night's sleep? (not necessarily any substances - it can be aromatherapy oils, certain types of music etc.)

1. 7 in the week, 10 on a weekend.. (I like my sleep!)
2. Anywhere between 10 and 11pm
3. 9am onwards preferably.. No chance of that in the week!
4. No
5. Mostly closed - its noisy with it open and I am paranoid about spiders.
6. By either reading or dabbling on here.
7. I don;t sleep well when there is something on my mind. Kids can keep me awake sometimes too.
8. If I really can't sleep I will get up and make a cup of tea, then read. Usually I will lie awake for ages thinking rubbish thoughts before I get up tho.
9. Curl up on my side.
10. Nothing especially.

Hope you can find a cure for your insomnia :rose:

1. 5
2. Midnight
3. 1000h
4. Yes
5. Depends on if it's hot
6. bath / email
7. Stress.
8. I don't have the problem
9. side
10. Music

I'm the wrong guy to ask these questions tho. While I don't sleep WELL, I pretty much sleep whenever and where ever I want. I've slept standing and I've slept for 27 straight hours.

What seems to be the cause of your insomnia? Maybe I can help.

~Cheers

1. How many hours' sleep do you get on average each night?

I average 6 but low end is 4 and high end is 7

2. What's your ideal bed time?

I woudl prefer 12:30 but work and family makes that unrealistic

3. What's your ideal waking up time?

10:30 and see above

4. Would you consider yourself to have sleeping problems?

Do children and a wife count as sleeping problems?

5. Do you sleep with the window open or closed?

Closed, but a ceiling fan on medium even in winter

6. How do you wind down for the night?

Read a bit, watch some tv, lay in bed and just let my mind wander or daydream a bit.

7. What things have the potential to keep you awake at night, or disrupt your sleep?

Kids, wife, stress, the near quart of water I drank before bed time.

8. What do you do if you can't sleep?

Masturbate or watch tv

9. What position do you sleep in?

All of them. Usually starting off on my right side, then on my back, then left side, then back to my back then kind of legs flat back twisted kind of gymanst in freeze frame kind of thing then start over again

10. Do you rely on anything to give you a restful night's sleep? (not necessarily any substances - it can be aromatherapy oils, certain types of music etc.)

Nope, but I know I sleep better when I snuggle.

1. How many hours' sleep do you get on average each night? 6 - 7 hours
2. What's your ideal bed time? 10-11pm
3. What's your ideal waking up time? 8am sharp!
4. Would you consider yourself to have sleeping problems? Some times.
5. Do you sleep with the window open or closed? Spring, fall open. Winter, summer closed.
6. How do you wind down for the night? Watch a little TV, play with my granddaughter
7. What things have the potential to keep you awake at night, or disrupt your sleep? Lately, not much (see #10)
8. What do you do if you can't sleep? (see #10)
9. What position do you sleep in? On my side, left or right.
10. Do you rely on anything to give you a restful night's sleep? (not necessarily any substances - it can be aromatherapy oils, certain types of music etc.) I am currently on an anti-depressant which I take before bed after about a half an hour sleep just overcomes me. The unfortunate side effect of the anti-depressant is that I really don't give a crap about much. I also always have a fan running for the white noise (it helps drown out the noises of things that would wake me at night)

1. How many hours' sleep do you get on average each night?

Depends. I'm OK if I get six to seven contiguous hours. Which happens less often than I like.

2. What's your ideal bed time?

Good question. Wish I knew.

3. What's your ideal waking up time?

Same as 2.

4. Would you consider yourself to have sleeping problems?

Yes.

5. Do you sleep with the window open or closed?

Open at least a little. Don't have any choice in the matter as the window opening mechanism is fucked.

6. How do you wind down for the night?

Read.

7. What things have the potential to keep you awake at night, or disrupt your sleep?

Strange, unexpected noises. And thoughts generated by stuff I read, usually political stuff.

8. What do you do if you can't sleep?

Get up. Do something useful.

9. What position do you sleep in?

Fetal position.

10. Do you rely on anything to give you a restful night's sleep? (not necessarily any substances - it can be aromatherapy oils, certain types of music etc.)

Masturbation. ;)

:rose: Thanks everyone who's answered so far :rose:

Laughingbandit... I have no idea what's disrupting my sleep. I think it might be overexcitement and overstimulation  I'm really happy for the first time in months, possibly longer, and I have very little stress in my life. I go to bed bubbling over with excitement every night, which means there's no way in hell I'm going to sleep straight away. Sometimes I watch the L Word in bed, in the hope that I'll drift off as I'm watching it. But the next thing I know, it's 2 in the morning and I'm wide awake. This makes me panic, cos I know I have to be up in about 4-5 hours. I sleep eventually, but then wake up about 2-3 hours later.

1. Usually 4-5, lately 2-3 at night + 1 in the afternoon
2. Around 2 to 3 o'clock in the morning
3. Eightish, if in a rhythm of getting up early sevenish
4. No
5. Open
6. I chat to crazy girls until they wear me out.
7. Nothing
8. Wait until I can
9. Either on my right side or flat on my belly
10. Not really, occasionally Rob's method

When I have had problems unwhinding I usually take two tylenol and a hot shower. The tylenol gets rid of all those pesky little aches and pains that we all have but really don't notice. The hot shower relaxes the muscles so I'm more relaxed when I crawl between the sheets.

What's tylenol?

Acetaminophen is the generic name - it's a pain reliever that doesn't burn holes in your stomach. But if you have liver problems then you should use Ibuprophen.

From a guy with a certified sleeping disorder:

1. How many hours' sleep do you get on average each night?
On average? 7, I guess. But it kind of varies from 0 to 11.

2. What's your ideal bed time?
Just after midnight. I never manage to go to bed then though.

3. What's your ideal waking up time?
Between 8 am and 9 am. (Provided I fel asleep in time the night before.)

4. Would you consider yourself to have sleeping problems?
Hell, I've got papers to prove it.

5. Do you sleep with the window open or closed?
Normally closed, but open when it's crazy hot in the summer.

6. How do you wind down for the night?
I don't. That's my problem. I keep going until exhaustion hits like a ton of manure.

7. What things have the potential to keep you awake at night, or disrupt your sleep?
Keep me awake? Anything. Disrupt my sleep? Not much

8. What do you do if you can't sleep?
Piss and moan about it.

9. What position do you sleep in?
Horizontal. Other than that, anything goes.

10. Do you rely on anything to give you a restful night's sleep?
Nothing other than a reasonable amount of silence. I was going to say "What Rob said", but I realized that a wank doesn't help me sleep, instead it might help me stop doing whatever kept me from going to bed in the first place.

Hmmm... having a wank seems to be a very popular solution. Maybe I'll try it tonight and let you all know how I got on :)

I refuse to answer on the grounds that it will make my insommniac friends unhappy.

I also catch a 15-30 minute catnap most afternoons.

Actually, that part is kinda interesting. After a substantial lunch I can barely keep my eyes open. If I lie down and nod off for even a couple minutes, then I am alert and good to go until midnight-ish. It's like the food triggers the release of sleepie chems in the brain, and the quickie econo-nap "resets" a switch to turn off the sleepy chem flow.

(Sorry for the use of technical nuero-biological terms. Just try to keep up, you laypersons.)

1. How many hours' sleep do you get on average each night? I usually get around 6 hours a night...plenty for me.

2. What's your ideal bed time? around midnight

3. What's your ideal waking up time? if left alone to wake up by myself, usually around 6:30

4. Would you consider yourself to have sleeping problems? absolutely not. I go to sleep so damn fast that sometimes my head hasn't even hit the pillow before I'm out for the count.

5. Do you sleep with the window open or closed? I would rather it be open, but there's not many days here that are good for that...either way too damn hot, or too cold.

6. How do you wind down for the night? I don't. I'm going a hundred miles an hour right up until I go to bed.

7. What things have the potential to keep you awake at night, or disrupt your sleep? not a whole hell of a lot

8. What do you do if you can't sleep? get up, read, watch tv, whatever. It's no good just laying in bed with your eyes wide open.

9. What position do you sleep in? on my left side

10. Do you rely on anything to give you a restful night's sleep? (not necessarily any substances - it can be aromatherapy oils, certain types of music etc.) I keep a fan running wide-ass open in the room 365 days a year for the noise. It's hard for me to sleep if it's too quiet.

I think one of the reasons I go to sleep so fast is that I worked two jobs while I was in college (one full time, one part time), and took a full course load - usually 16 - 18 hours a quarter. I had very little time to sleep, and had to maximize every single minute. I guess I trained myself to fall asleep the minute I lay down.

Oh BAAAAH. you're in love. it's ok. It'll wear off in a couple weeks. PUWAHHAHAHAH j/k j/k. I hope it never does. =)~

Most people....the initial high in ANYTHING doesn't last very long. A couple days maybe. So it's not something I'm terribly worried about. Even if it's been weeks, your life will level out sooner or later.

In the meantime, what's going to help you sleep?
For you, first thing that comes to mind is masturbation. Releasing that excitement will help you relax. Not to mention the orgasm.

But like people who can't stop thinking about work or other things, you have to find a way to stop thinking about it. Reading a book that talks about how to grow a garden or something. Or borrow a physics textbook from the library.

Listening to music might help you. Soft and tranquil and without words. You start playign lovey dovey songs and you'll get giddy. =)~

Bonne chance,

Breathing excercises may help. Helps you focus.

I hope you find some relief soon.

Peace.
