The right amount of research is?

According to my neuroses, the proper amount of research is 400+ hours of esoteric rabbit holes you didn't even know you'd be diving into, which turns the idea you thought would be a simple 2-3 Lit page short story into a 10+ Lit page novel, and that's after you trimmed out a bunch of extraneous details and pointless meanderings your characters insisted on exploring when you were just trying, for the love of god, to get them from Point B to Point D, not realizing there are some 700 Point C's between the two.
