The Ranch... Open..

Josh Smith

Josh had heard about a ranch looking for experienced hands as he filled his ford pickup with gas josh swings his big 6 foot 3 200 lb frame up into his truck and drives to the ranch the attendant at the filling station had told him about pulling into the drive he gets out and notices 2 men talking as he walks to the front door and knocks

Tim chuckled slightly. "No, she's not expecting me. It's just that roumer has it she needs ranch hands, and I was in the area, so I thaught I'd see what I can do"

George seemed heavier set than Tim, but then that was to be expected. Most people were. He had always been of slim build, but he had some strenth in his wirey muscles

He raised an eyebrow at the next question. "Can I ride? Yeah, I got a little experience under my belt. But, y'know, I'm not after anything special. I'm an artist, see, but I've always loved horses"

"No I'm not expecting anything special either, just making sure you can stay on the horse while we're rounding up the stock. Wouldn't want you to fall and get trampled by a herd of horse," George laughed at the look on Tim's face.

"Nice to meet you as well, Katherine," Anna said pleasantly. She shook Katherine's hand firmly. She could still remember her father teaching her as a little girl how to shake hands. Always firmly, Anna. Too light and people will think you're weak. Showing weakness was a cardinal sin according to Lawrence Pell, Anna's father. She had grown into a woman who didn't like to be vulnerable.

"I was passing through," she said simply. "I was hoping to find a place where I might get some riding lessons. I'd be a beginner, pretty much. I haven't been on a horse since I was small. Also, if you have the room--I'd love to stay. The atmosphere is much nicer here than the hotel. I'm not looking for anything fancy...or if not, maybe you could recommend some place nearby?"

She admired Katherine; Anna admired any woman in business. She knew firsthand it wasn't easy. She would pay the woman well.

The thaught of falling off a horse, or getting trampled made tim wince slightly. The thaught of looking like a complete fool made him grimmace furthur.

"I assure you George, I can stay on a horse. I mean, I don't think I'd survive the embarressment of falling off!" He managed a chuckle

George

"In that case, provided Miss Katherin agrees your hired, you can do your painting in your free time," George replied. He liked the attitude of this guy, and if he'd been on a horse before it shoudn't take him long to get used to the saddle again.

"Let's go inside and meet her shall we," George said turning towards the ranch house. "We'll fix you up in the bunk house later," he added.

"Wait a minute lets see what this othe guy wants," George says as he sees another guy walking towards them.

"Can I help you," he asks. "I'm the forman here, he adds.

Turning toward the 2 appaching men josh extends his hand Josh smith i heard this ranch was hiring hands

George

" Yes! That's right, What experience have you got?" George asks taking the proffered hand and shaking it.

"We were just going to see the owner, Tim here is also looking for work and from what he tells me I'm willing to take him on," George tells Josh. As Josh shakes hands with Tim.

"Once I know your experience, I'll decide and then we can see Miss Katherin and get it confirmed," George added.

Kat's acceptance as to what all had happened was very comforting and a relief. Maybe things would start going right now, it was about time for both of them to do what they had always talked and drempt about. Building the perfect ranch, horse lessons, maybe some racing, trails and breeding.

"Dinner does smell good and I have to admit I can't wait for some actual home cooking." Following Kat into the house tossing a quick look back to see George talking with two men now. He was going to be a great foreman, I just knew he would.

I loved the sound wooden floors makes when a person walks on them. The echo makes a house sound empty but tonight I knew it wasn't. As we walked into the kitchen to see Dave and two women sitting at the table with Carolyn. "This smells fantastic you all did a fantastic job in here." Smiling to each woman as Kat goes around making her introductions naming me as her partner.

Both women were pretty, but looked like they weren't use to the ranchers life. Although they had set up a nice spread in the kitchen and I refused to begrude that one. "Riding lessons, those can be done." Turning to look at Kat going off on a thought I was having. "Do you still have that little white mare that we called ghost? The real quiet one? I would bet she would make for a good riding mare, she is gentle enough and not real big to begin with."

Walking over to share the sink with Kat so that I could wash my hands as well. My thought racing at the idea of riding lessons and which horses might still be here and which would have the right temperment for the purpose.

i worked on ranches down in texas all my life *shakes tims hand and checks out the competition*

George weighedup the new comer as he shook hands with Tim, if what he said was true he'd make a good addition to the ranch staff. All he had to do now was get Katherin to formalise taking the two of them on.

"Let's go inside and meet Miss Katherin," George said. "As far as I'm concerned I'll hire you both but she's the owner and must have the final say at the moment," George added.

He turned and led the two men towards the ranch house.

"There's food on the table right now so you can eat, then I'll show you where the bunk house is," George said as they walked towards the house.

Tim followed behind George. "Food? Great! I, uhh, havn't eaten anything but energy bars in days.. heh"

Tim couldn't help but wonder what Katherine looked like. All anyone had said was that she was a rancher. Lots of other thaughts raced through his mind the closer they got

as Josh shakes hands with Tim 'Howdy tim im Josh'.Josh removes his hat and looks around as he follows Tim and George into the house 'food sounds great I havent had a good meal in days' hmmmmmmmmmm wonder what the boss lady looks like

Katherin smiled at the two women as she listened to them both thinking Sam’s suggestion that they use Ghost would be a great idea. They still had plenty of saddles and tack in the storage shead. Kat had made shure to keep them in good reapair.

You are both welcome to stay, for the night as its getting to late to travel this evening we can talk about something more permanent in the morning if you still wish to stay. Ridding lesions are most certainly available. They usually run around $40.00 a lesion…

If you decide to stay here for the lesions I will ask that you help out around the Ranch in addition to the lesions as payment for room and board. Carolyn would be your charge, here in the house, and Sam is in charge of the ridding lesions, I’ll let you work out a schedule with her in the morning if your still interested.

Looking over at Sam after taking a drink from her glass Kat saw George and two other gentlemen coming in with him as she answered Sam' s question about Ghost. I agree Sam that Ghost would be a good horse to start off with, until she becomes more comfortable in the saddle. Then we can move her to a more spirited horse if she wants.

Kat rose to greet George and the new men, and had to smile. As George introduced them It looked as though things were turning out for the better, as she was gaining a crew fast. She just hopped that she didn’t let any of them down.

Tim stepped forward as George introduced him to Katherine, smiling pleasantly. She was a stunner and no mistake! Of course, in the time he'd had to glance around the room, all the women there had a certain charm all their own

"Hi, uhh, Katherine. I'm Tim as, uhh, George has already said. Um, I was kinda moving through the area, and heard you may be looking for hired hands, so, heh, I decided to drop by"

Riding lessons? Hmmm.. No, Penny had never ridden a horse. She'd seen them of course, pulling carriages in New York. Well, she was certainly willing to help out around the ranch for room and board, lessons or none.

She smiled softly ....

Carolyn quietly moved about making sure the platters and bowls were full for everyone. She smiled at all the conversations and laughter she heard. People were coming and going, she figured everyone was getting settled or doing more chores. She just enjoyed the goings on and washed some of the pots and pans while catching bits and pieces of conversations.

She started thinking of breakfast and then lunch. She'd need to get organized quickly. First things first, she had to plan breakfast. She saw lots of eggs, bacon and ham so that was definitely on the menu. With all the bread she saw in the box she could offer french toast too. She thought she'd spend some time on the Internet tonight preparing menus and checked for the needed ingredients. She had already started a list of provisions and needed to talk with Kat about supplies.

For now though it was pleasant watching and listening, it all just felt good and so far away from what she had known.

Penny noticed when Carolyn started cleaning up, and without being asked lept to help her. She smiled.

"Figure you could use a hand?"

George

George waited while the two guys spoke to Katherin before speaking.

"Josh has been a ranch hand for years in Texas, so he should be a good recruit. Tim here hasn't ridden for some time, but assures me he wont fall off and get trampled by the herd," George told Katherin with a grin on his face.

"I'm happy to give them both a chance, but the final say is up to you," he added.

Out of the corner of his eye he could see Sam listening and watching what was happening. He smiled to himself as he realised he was interested in what she thought.

Tim excused himself from George and Katherine and walked over to the woman who had just sprung to her feet. "Uhh, Hi" He held out his hand. "I'm Tim."

He was a little nervous about meeting all these new people, and learning everyone's names, but he tried to hide it behind his smile. He had to admit, the woman he had introduced himself to was rather cute with her curly hair, green eyes...

"Oh ... Hello. I'm Penny. Nice to meet you."

She smiles widely, and takes his hand to shake it. So many new people ... it was starting to feel like a Manhattan social event: except for the fact that everyone here was a genuine person, not a botox, silicone fake.

"Pleased to meet you Penny" Tim shook her hand firmly. "So, uhh as you can guess, I just turned up. Mind if I lend a hand with the washing up? Feel a little useless just hanging around, y'know?" He chuckled a little and smiled at Penny

Things were indeed beginning to get busy around here, as I listened to George introduce the new guys to Kat. He was so careful about how he handled people, it was like watching him tend to Damion and I found myself fasinated by his actions.

Seeing the new gent called Tim step up to Penny while she was helping Carolyn start the clean up I figured I could take her place at the sink. Giving her a smile as I take the towel out of her hands, moving over to the sink next to Carolyn. Keeping an ear on Kat and the goings on around us as well as drying dishes. Chores weren't the first thing on my list that I liked to do but Carolyn made it easy and fun with her chatter about morning and what she could make in the kitchen. Kat had done good with hiring Carolyn, she was great with knowing what needed to be done and what she could do and how to get it all done.

"Your pretty good at all this I am so glad that Kat has you here, exspecial sense I love good food I am almost betting you and I are going to be great friends." Grinning as I place a plate on the stack to be put away.

"Sure that would be ...."

Sam comes along and grabs the towel from Penny's hands, with a grin.

".... Ummm ... apparently not necessary."

Penny giggled.

"Well ... Guess we could go talk, or find something to do ...."

She shrugged, and looked at Tim ....
