The Official Author's Hangout Summer Lovin' Contest Support Thread

I'm probably leading in with incest, but have an idea for a second entry.

I'm just trying to spin it towards one of the categories left on my lit "bucket list" to writ in.

Right now I'm down to interracial and Lesbian, and.....Romance if you can believe that, but I think that would be a chapter series so out for a contest.

I love goals. :D Good luck with your Lit. Bucket List!

Thank you! I started the goal last X-mas and got fetish, mature, non con off the list and my Nude Day entry took care of Group.

So I need to knock out the other 3 by years end. The contests are good excuses to branch out.

Yes, they are. My branching out a few years ago was Survivor - the contests this time around for me is for Survivor as well as just attempting to come up with some sort of theme that fits each one.

I came up with a Loving Wives story a couple nights ago that will work great (in my opinion) for the Summer Loving, but it will be slathered with hate mail/comments, so I'm going to triple coat my armor. :D

I don't know about hate mail/comments. My last two LW stories seemed to confuse the largest and loudest of the trolls over there. That or they were on vacation. The comments were for the most part thoughtful and... Uh... I hate to use the word but Normal.

Normally my loving wives stories are thought provoking and I get more thought provoking comments, occasionally I get the nasty ones. This one I think will get the same mixture, but I'm preparing my armor anyway. :D

Hey, Red. My hubby would like to watch you put on your armor. He has this weird chain-mail fetish or do you need plate-mail in this line of work?

Chapters might be out, but I'm sure you can write in episodes. The first episode might be the first attraction; the second might be engagement; the third, marriage, etc. As long as each episode had a distinct beginning and end and a climactic moment (which might or might not be a climax) they should be alright.

Yes, contrary to the perception of certain trolls, the whole point of eliminating chapter stories was that the contests were getting clogged up with multiple chapters of the same stories. More and more authors were doing it, and the number of chapters was getting larger with each contest.

Hmm... I've got Xannera still out there unattached, old man Johanson's house unoccupied since Daniel "moved on", and the old man should have some great-grandsons coming up to the right age now...

Legacy of the Wood?

*Starts grabbing plot bunnies jumping on his head and stuffing them in the idea cage*

Well, my beta reader gave initial thumbs up to my summer story, which wasn't necessary but is nice to know. Now I just need to finish it, figure out a category, and wonder if I should post under a different name. ;)

Do that and scouries will blow a gasket. I can't get over YOU saying that, really.

The story I'm writing is very different from my usual stuff in a few ways, which likely means lower votes. Also, I've noticed my stand-alone stories tend to be rated lower as well these days, whether they're contest entries or not. Other writers use alts when they write in different genres, and I was considering it, that's all.

I figure it's a bit of a trade-off. Writing as PennLady might get me more eyes, but posting under a different username might result in a fairer reading/rating of the story.

Going off the beaten path, if you've worn one too wide, can also cause your readers to balk and complain every time you post something outside of what they expect.

That's exactly why I created Les Lumens.

Then I started my third pen name as an experiment to see how I could do with zero name recognition.

I don't know if my path is too wide or too narrow, but straying off it does seem to meet with resistance. ;)

So, like I said, I may post this under a different name. We shall see.

Keep it secret from your readers for a while ( and from the forum ), but make sure you leave some sort of a note for Laurel in the submission after the contest tagline if you enter it in a contest -- especially if you've won within the last six months.

Make sure she knows, so there are no flub-ups that accidently award your alt a prize when you're not eligible because you won in your main name. I'm not sure she keeps the results so that #4 could be moved up, and it would be a surefire way to summon up an even more acidic and long-lasting diatribe from the resident trolls -- with the added benefit of letting them sprinkle a nugget of out-of-context truth in with the lies.

Once you establish the alt under its own steam, you can sort of slowly merge them back in with your main name, and the readers quit complaining. They get curious enough to start reading the "other stuff" and usually end up liking it just as much once they stop being bullheaded and needy for their favorite characters/stories.

One of these days, I'll probably merge my third name back in as well.

Hey Penn, the one time I wrote something considered outside my norm in GM I got hammered lol. Then, when I decided to try my hand at m/f, I made an alt. It worked out good for me. And outside of my beta and editor no one knew it was me--which was want I wanted.

Thanks. I'll retire to the basement vault at some point to make my final decision. ;)
