Premium unleaded (98) is absolutely recommended for high performance vehicles. You wouldn’t catch me pouring 95 into a 911 or a Maserati. Using fuel that isn’t recommended can cause all sorts of problems. Ping for starters.

Ping tends to be caused by carbon rather than too low an octane rating. Modern engines run perfectly well on standard octane rated fuels. These days it's higher ethanol contents that are causing issues, especially with regard to degrading fuel lines and seals.

A lot of modern cars can get away with using regular unleaded, yep. But I would go with what is recommended for high performance vehicles to avoid silly problems. Very costly problems. And I know because I’ve had the silly problems myself lol. Fuel companies add shit to help prevent this.
