there are store bought pies here. i have no shame. i'm also not doing anything until the weekend and that's fine. as long i get to eat pie i'll be happy.

sweet potato, cherry and pumpkin(which i don't really give a shit about).

Thanksgiving and Christmas were the only days of the year when we had pumpkin pie, so it's mandatory. I like it, and I like that it's something special, just for those days.

mandatory, schmandoatory. it's fucking boring. and they've pretty much killed the specialness of it now that they have pumpkin flavored everything.

It was the same in my family. At some point, my mother added buttermilk pies at Christmas. There's still pumpkin pies at both holidays now, but it's not Christmas without buttermilk pie. Now that she's gone, the buttermilk pies are mine to make.

sugar cream, here. pretty much the same thing as a buttermilk pie just with heavy cream instead of buttermilk. it's a hoosier thing. sadly, last time i made them (sooooo fucking easy) i put them on a cold baking sheet and then put that in the oven. guess what happened.

Store bought. Home made. Replicated. Whatever.

As long as it covers up the nasty taste of turkey, bring it on.

I only mandate it for myself, of course, and I don't go in for the other pumpkin spice crap so the actual pie is still special.

You made a big, creamy mess? :)

I don't know buttermilk pie.

It is ridiculously rich, and a little tangy, and the first forkful is often followed by "oh my god."

pumpkin ice cream is great.

once.

after that it fucking sucks.

and i've never had buttermilk, but sugar cream is the shit. it's very simple both to make and in flavor, but it's damned good. makes me think of my grandmother.

Buttermilk pie sounds wonderful.

We do thanksgiving, even though its a long time since either of us lived in the states. But this year I think we are scaling back. It started when I said I was thinking a turkey was too much as it was just the two of us this year, and in the same vein I thought we should chose one type of pie. As we found it difficult to decide on pie I went further and suggested it would benefit me to not eat pie and it would not kill him, We're going to have a roast chicken with cranberry jelly instead of sauce, and sweet potatoes and green beans .

But then you said buttermilk pie and now I feel I should look into this. :D

Your Thanksgiving sounds lovely. Perhaps I should pull out my buttermilk pie recipe later today and post it in the food thread. :)

You really hate turkey!

so fucking rich. when my grandmother made them eating one piece was like dropping a pie bomb in your stomach, but, man, was it fucking worth it. i wish we still had her recipes, but those have sadly gone missing and were likely pillaged by some random cousin when she died.
