The Earth Day 2011 Contest Support Thread

I suspect that the theme of this contest is specifically attracting trolls. I've deleted quite a few messages (after foolishly replying to them) which seemed obsessed with bashing treehuggers. One of them specifically stated they didn't read more than two paragraphs of the story. I doubt if they even read that much.

Even though it's a given that these people are assholes, they still have every right to cast votes (I assume) and very probably gave 1 votes to my story, as I imagine they did to any other story they came across. I assume the sweeps primarily capture multiple uses of the same IP rather than just erasing every one star vote?

I also wonder what the stats are on longer stories. I'm personally less likely to give a low vote to a long (four pages or more) story simply because if I don't like it, I'm not sticking with it for that long, and I simply don't think it's fair to vote on a story if I didn't read it all the way through. Therefore, if I get through six pages, that in itself says something about my liking for the story.

Whereas I can last through a page of pretty much anything but word salad, but that doesn't mean I liked it. However, I might give a short story a bit more of a break by considering it purely as a stroke piece, whereas longer efforts have to be judged on characters, plot, and writing style rather than simply arousal factor.

Any author who can make me laugh on purpose also gets points for that alone.

But I suspect the average voter grades a bit differently than I do.

That's very much a factor in this particular contest. Lit is on average tilted toward the left wing, and thus attracts a lot of right wingnuts crusading to stamp out a nest of evil :p

Knowing that kicking someone in the numbers is about the most painful thing they can do, they'll bomb and leave nasty comments left and right. The more specific your story is on details, the more likely they are to attack.

Mention manmade global warming, manmade global climate change, or -- the ultimate evil -- CO2, and you're in for a beating.

Long stories undoubtedly fare better than short ones for exactly the reason you mentioned -- unless they're low vote stories. Those can sometimes spring back with high scores ( though barely qualified vote totals ) because the trolls believe they've sufficiently beat the story down once it's off the radar. That in turn keeps people who might have otherwise voted 4 from noticing it to cast a vote, and when the troll votes get swept, the score soars into the stratosphere.

First off, that's an awesome statistics page. Thanks Marlow.

As for the vote quality, I think it's caused by two things. Firstly, I think that for general readers, because it's a contest, their standards may be raised. No matter how well you write, it's hard to write better than someone else can imagine you'll write. If their standards are especially high, they may give the story a lower vote, despite the quality being similar to, or even greater than, the average story.

Secondly, as every single person who's read this thread knows, there's bad blood in contests. A large number of people are going to vote down stories, and if they vote them down with 3s, for example, rather than 1s, they probably won't get swept and will do more long-term damage.

A third possibility, which I don't consider quite as likely, as that, for contests, people just write loads and loads of crap, assuming that volume=quality, which brings it down. It might be useful to examine a per capita average of the stories, in which the average of each author's contest stories is averaged with equal weight. One author writing 20 fast, sloppy, crappy stories could easily drag down a contest. If anyone's more talented with using Literotica than I, and feels up to the challenge, could we get a per capita story average for the contest?

You know, being that I'm the ONLY author writing 20 or more stories for a contest, I can't help but feel that you're referring to me.

Now, for you to write what you did, I suspect you haven't read any of my stories because I don't write fast, sloppy, and/or crappy stories. I take my writing very seriously.

Other than you just being ignorant, what's your problem?

Why must it bother you what I do? What the fuck do you care if I write one or one hundred stories?

"Asshole!"

And the last track before submission ends.

6 New stories bring us up to 71. One new category brings us up to 22.

Average score is 3.99 and the median is 4.04

10 THOUSAND 226 votes have been cast for an average of 157 and a median of 66.

Contest stories have been viewed 854,126 times for an average of 13,140 and a median of 6,950

Stories have accumulated 140 Favorites and 531 comments.

If you were waiting until the last minute...

This is it!

About ten minutes left to get your story in the queue, or it's wait until next year time, people!

Wow, I can hardly believe it is over. Feels like time really flew between the time I got mine posted to now. I hope everyone that wanted to get an entry in did so, course, there is always another contest coming around the bend. :) Good luck everyone :)

Views on mine are seriously blah thanks to the late posting, but otherwise it's doing okay. I'm qualified with enough votes to survive the sweeps, barring an unusually harsh one.

Just annoying as hell to lose the whole 8 overnight hours. Probably cut votes/views/everything else in half.

I am loving the incest category -- 330 votes in 48 hours. I normally get about 25, lol. Views also awesome.

Dark -- I have posted in sci-fi and fantasy a fair few times, and aside for specific authors, the viewing figures tend to be pretty abysmal anyway. That said, I still find the average scores to be higher, so it's swings and roundabouts.

I have a bit of experience in the category ;) I'm easily down by half with that late posting. Losing the critical overnight votes that get it up to H by the time the normies wake up in the morning and hit Lit seriously cuts down the readership.

Better than a couple I posted last year outside the contest around Earth Day. Those didn't post until after bloody noon  That's why I put everything that's finished on hold while contest submissions are going on. Not getting screwed like that again.

BESTROIKA, get ready for the trolls and sweeps now. The ratings and votes start ping-ponging and you'll wonder what the heck is going on. Please say that you'll be posting more stories!

FIREBRAIN: LOL! And *ahem* your story was most certainly fiiiilthy!!! I'll admit it took me about 4 times of trying to read it to actually finish it. Yeah, yours was the first story in that category that I finished reading. I got caught up in the plot and couldn't help myself. (No disrespect to other writers of it, just isn't my cup of tea.)

Yeah with Sci-Fi/Fantasy and Non-Human, I am happy when I get enough votes to qualify.

DARK: Yeah, I didn't realize how many votes you get early on in the competition, as opposed to posting near the end. I really had planned on posting mine earlier too. I blame the stomach bug on that one.

I've read/voted/commented on a handful of stories, so far. Trying to get to all the AHers first. We'll see. Methinks the weekend will be reserved for naughty story reading time. ;)

Firebrain -- I'm jealous. :) I have 289 votes and I posted on 3/28. I'm in the wrong genre, it appears.

PennLady, your story was perfect for that genre! I'm still wander-lusting over here. :catroar:

LOL

Thanks, Luna. :) What I really meant was that I wasn't in the popular incest category. Guess I should have said "category" instead of "genre." I tend to use them interchangeably and I shouldn't.

Oh I know, and I think they are interchangeable too. I still stand by that you are in the perfect category (maybe not for votes). ;)

Well there was no other category to put it in -- I think it was a little too sweet for erotic couplings. ;) And mostly I write in romance anyway, even my nonhuman stories are sort of "furry romances," as I think of them (but not that kind of furry; not the fetish :D ). I think I've written in romance, nonhuman, erotic couplings (1), group sex (1) and sf/f (1). I guess I've found my niche. ;)

I am a category whore. I'm doing LW next.

Luna -- I did wonder what the people who normally read my stuff would think of the incest angle. I can totally appreciate that it's not a lot of people's cup of tea.

Penn Lady -- like I said, I don't normally get a lot of votes. Sounds like you're doing very well!

I actually meant the time of day. You might get a handful of extra votes ( by percentage ) by entering early, but most of your votes/views still come on Day 1, with the second day making up most of the rest.

Not posting until 8am is a major kick in the knees, there. That's 1/3 of your most "profitable" day down the tubes from the get-go.

PennLady: True. :) I'm with you there! I have a few works outside of those categories. If I ever finish them, it will be interesting to see how they are received. I tend to put my style in with erotica romance or "romantica."

Speaking of which - ahh - less than a week to find out if Harlequin is interested in my paranormal/vampire story for their Nocturne Cravings line.

Firebrain: How has the response from regulars been, so far?

Dark: Ah. I had no idea that time of day had such an impact until you had stated that a few days ago. I've still noticed a difference in my posting late in the competition.

Manu must be working on something, because the feedback portal is going ape-shit *laugh*

Half the time, the most recent comments won't load. I sometimes see the "most comments in 30 days" box load, but the others are blank boxes one line wide.

http://www.literotica.com/stories/feedbackportalv2.php

The Old version of the portal is completely non-functional.

I am bracing myself even as we speak Luna my love, or at least trying too. I cannot wait until the fall with the supernatural horror submissions. I will indeed be posting more stories, and thank you for asking for more darlin, I really appreciate it. <3

It looks like the new category hubs are down, too.

It looks like the new category hubs are down, too.

Feedback portal was back up the last time I looked, but considering the category hubs include the new comment hubs, my suspicion is that the Hubs are about to see official release.

( I've noted that clicks on category listings from some pages earlier in the day went to the hubs, while others didn't )

One day after the end of submissions, two new stories put us at 73. If anyone put anything in last night, it should be going up tonight. Unless there's some kind of a flub, the new stories added in the next 24 hours should be it.

At that point, I'll start researching who's eligible and who's qualified, sorting the list accordingly, in preparation for the sweeps.

The average score is now 4.04 and the median 4.06

I only saw a few votes swept, but many stories jumped a lot in score. The total I've been able to observe swept across all stories thusfar is 36.

10,760 votes have been cast for an average of 152 and a median of 66

Contest stories have been viewed 905,433 times for an average of 12,753 and a median of 6,686

Contest stories have accumulated 143 favorites and 562 comments.

Going to be a tall order to make it to a million views, unless an incest story with "mom" in the title posts tonight ;)

I have one manuscript to get through (am interning at publisher, slush is currently smothering) and can then start reading the entries. Looking forward to it :) (will make a change after the lighter stuff I've had on my list!).

Luna -- have mostly had feedback from new people. Lord knows what everyone will think of my gothic loving wives effort, lol.
