The DNA Hoax by Ancestry dot com...

Leaving aside the likely racist aspect (cause RealAmerican),
he raised some interesting points.

How do they choose their baseline DNA's for each ethnic group?

They use genetic markers limited to particular regions. That is, birds of a feather flock together. If you have a marker the probability is high an ancestor came from the target region.

Why is anyone concerned with where they came from 10,000 years ago? I get the family tree thing but come on.

Because who we are comes down the pike from the past, and much of who we are isn't crazy or damaged. We need to know it.

Your ancestors from 10,000 years ago are part of your family tree. Some people don't care about such ancestors, and some do.

my vision of the cubicles of Ancestry.com is a shitload of english majors who cannot get a job elsewhere, making shit up as they go along. If they had a good time the night before, you might have a bit of royalty in your genes. If not, you probably descend from a drunken irishman.

Most of the research is done by amateur members and is incestuous. Why?

They find someone else has a name in their tree that matches, so they copy large chunks of the other person's tree without checking for accuracy or inconsistency.

I did that when I started on Ancestry. I thought 'Great! Someone else has done all the hard work.'

According to my maternal line I have an ancestor who was a younger daughter of a disgraced nobleman. Once you get a nobleman (or noblewoman) in your tree you have documented pedigrees going back centuries. So her father was descended from a daughter of King Henry II of England, and Henry II was descended from:

The Counts of Provence; and through them Julius Caesar and Cleopatra. Julius Caesar claimed descent from the Goddess Venus (although none of his contemporaries actually believed him). Cleopatra claimed descent from the Egyptian God Osiris and the Goddess Isis, and the Greek Goddess Aphrodite. But Henry II had other ancestors of Viking origins and through them claimed to be a Wodinga - a descendent of the Norse God Woden or Odin.

So, according to ancestry I'm descended from English Royalty and Roman, Greek, Egyptian and Norse Gods. Please treat me with appropriate respect...

...or derision because it's a load of bollocks! :D

How do they account for all the travel and interbreeding?

I'd think the genetic make-up of people living in Ireland now ans 5,000 years ago are very different.

Could it being found in West Africa and the Mediterranean be caused by mosquitoes?

Not "caused" by. It occurs as a regular mutation, but the resultant anemia provides protection against malaria. So people with 1 gene for sickling and 1 normal don't suffer from malaria, so they reproduce more successfully than people with 2 normal genes, and thus the gene increases in frequency in the population. This is basic natural selection.

You said "The allele for sickling hemoglobin is most common in central West Africa, but is also found in relatively high frequencies in other areas where malaria is holoendemic"...

Doesn't that mean where there was malaria, caused sickle cell to be an adaptation?

That is confusing cause and effect like the argument:

Cats have four legs; Dogs have four legs; therefore Cats ARE Dogs.

Organisms evolve according to their environment, even over relatively short periods of time. An example is the "island rule" where large animals tend to grow smaller over several generations if stranded on an island, while small animals tend to grow larger under those circumstances.

You are wrong. Please watch the video link (4:30 mark).

It is true that you get half of your ethnic DNA from your mom and half from your dad. Then the next generation gets half of their genes from their mom and half from their dad - THEY DO NOT get half of their mom's and half of their dad's. That is why your siblings can have more of a certain ethnic gene than you.

Then another generation changes the ethnic make up. You can have a 5th Great Grandmother who is 100% Native American and you could have zero Native American in you.

:)

Anything produced by Ancestry dot com is suspect. No I didn't watch the propaganda films. They just want your money and most people are gullible enough to spend it on crap science because they don't know any better.

A sibling is the exact same generation as you. They, as your sibling get half from mom and half from dad, the same mom and dad I got my two halves from. And I'm not talking about a GGGGGrandMother. I'm talking about my Mom and Dad. Whatever the GGGGG was is already in mom or dad.

I'm not talking about anyone past me. I know what my genetic makeup is. My brothers is the exact same percentages as mine. No, he's not a twin. He's two years younger, but has the exact same parents.

Yes, genetically we aren't identical. There are other things that will be different. Eye color(we both have blue eyes), hair color(we both are blond), other genetic traits besides ethnicity. Things like, will be both be afflicted with Alzheimer (our mom has it, her mom had it), are we both susceptible to heart disease (I have already had a heart attack due to high cholesterol, so had my brother) so it would seem we are. But our ethnic makeup is exactly the same.

Mom = Irish 50%, German 45%, Dutch 3%, Norwegian 2% = 100%
Dad = German 50%, English(Saxon) 25%, Swedish 10%, Dutch 5%, Irish 5%, American Indian 3%, Other 2% = 100%

Me= German 47.5%, Irish 27.5%, English 12.5%, Swedish 5%, Dutch 4%, American Indian 1.5%, Norwegian 1%, Other 1% = 100%

I also received both parents recessive gene of blond hair and blue eyes. I did however inherit my dads hair where my brother inherited my moms hair. All the men on my moms side of the family are bald as billiard balls. Where my dads side kept their hair until they died. My brother is bald, I'm not. He hates that.

All of this has been researched via records available in the countries of origin by three members of the family(Mom's side) who were Catholic Priests and went back to the "old country" looking for ancestors. This was all done way before there were any computers...well, I guess ENIAC was round, but was mainly used to compute ballistics and such. It took place in the early '60s.

Your understanding is incorrect. Since your brother is not your identical twin it is virtually impossible for you to have the same genetic makeup as your brother even though you have the same mother and father.

Excuse me...that was a typo. What I meant to type, we have the same ethnic make up.

If you would have read just one more sentence...

Yes, genetically we aren't identical.

...instead of stopping to be a bitch, you might have understood what I was trying to get across.

What you're trying to get across is bullshit.

Denny---<-----that's me! The male half

That is confusing cause and effect like the argument:

Cats have four legs; Dogs have four legs; therefore Cats ARE Dogs.
Denny-------- Again it's how we look at it. Maybe DOGS are CATS.

Sure to you it might be...I bet you still think the world is flat too.

Actually, you're the one with flat Earth thinking, dumbass. You obviously would rather wallow in ignorance than expose yourself to scientific evidence that contradicts your preconceived notions. Fine. Continue wallowing.

And your still so confused you revert to name calling. You must be a liberal.
