Diversity never works out in practice, unless we're talking about cuisine, music, art, fashion. What always works is common-cause and common interests. Diversity is Babel.
When I sit down and think about it I see that folks of different races, ages, genders, cultures, religions, and sexual orientations share common causes and interests. They want a happy family life. They want freedom and a little control over their lives. They want to find success in what they do and make a difference.
You say you have a psyc background so let's look at it from Glasser's Choice Theory. The five basic needs are Survival, Freedom, Belonging, Power/significance, and Fun. These are things that we all share regardless of our race, politics, etc. Your common causes and interests can be found right here. Sure they'll come in different forms because individuals seek to get their needs met in different ways. But if you just pause for a moment to recognize and appreciate the fact that we're all trying to get to the same place you just might find yourself a bit less suspicious of your fellow Americans.
