On the matter of why people lie about this kind of thing (I'm not even going to touch on the actuality of rape -- that's opening a can of worms I'd rather not have to choke down), it's attention. It hurts statistics, and it hurts women who have actually been through something like that, so why would anyone do such a thing just for attention? Well, because many people are self-centered, and they either don't see or don't care how their ploy might affect things on a larger scale. A mentality that could step outside oneself and exist within the world around one wouldn't need those validating ploys to begin with.
Stepping away from the lying-about-rape issue into attention grabbing in general, tell me what kind of thread titles would get more responses?
A) I was just ass-molested by aliens, and now I'm pregnant with their ass-babbies.
B) u all suk and deserve to be ass-molested by aleins...
C) Everything is A-OK!
I'm guessing A and B, while C drifts to page two and beyond within a half-hour or so. I think that sucks, because when I come to a forum, I come to interact. When the only thing anyone seems to want to talk about is getting ass-molested by aliens, and you're not a pity-me or fuck-you type of person, it limits the kinds of things you can talk about and get any kind of response. Thank goodness this isn't universally true, and there are intelligent threads here, or else I'd definitely find other stomping grounds.
People are drawn to conflict, as either inflictor or victim. If you're neither, you have to rely on your wit and intelligence, and god knows that's asking an awful lot of some people.
So anyway, in conclusion, it's a quick way to get a lot of people to notice you, and if you're the kind of person who craves that, you probably don't care about who might get hurt in the long run.
