Well, it certainly wasn't perfect, but I had a much higher opinion of The Golden Compass's adaptation than most of the people I went with seemed to think. People don't recognize that movies and books are completely different media, and literal translation will seldom do well. That's why they call it adaptation. </rant>

Experience has shown me that people typically follow a pattern in life. Reckless behavior, irresponsibility in youth, wanting to be liked growing into finally finding out one isn't invincible, can't shirk responsibilities forever, to not caring so much what others think of them so much. It takes years to get that out of ones system. Sure, it's probably also a cultural thing.
