I know what Chef's problem is.

For example: Say you're on the main screen and you hit the 'general board' button and the message pops up.
You tell it you'll open the message on a new browser screen - it does so. You send a message back, and close the screen.
So, on that other window you're on the same screen 'general board' and you see a thread, something like, 'I've got a new digital camera and am posting naked pics of myself' by yours truly.
You rush to that thread and devour said pictures. Maybe you post a nice reply .. then you hit your 'back' button to go to the 'general board' screen again.

Now, when you hit that button what you're telling your browser is - remember that screen I was in before? I want you to show me it as you remember it. Your browser remembers there being a pop up so it creates one.

If you want the pop-up to disappear and to see the board as it is now you have to hit 'reload'. There, now the 'Nakked pics' is on top instead of the one that was there earlier, 'Why I hate you all' by Unregistered.
