People Greeter at Walmart

"Hi...Hello, Morning...etc..."

(After 15 minutes)
"Hi"*get the fuck outta here*

I like people, but, how many ways can you say "Hi?"

This strikes me as a thread that answers the question posed in Laurel's "Attitude" threads. What thanks do you want? You get a check at the end of the week. Sure it's not enough, but who ever thought they were making enough.

What would "thank" a teacher? Having a kid who's able to read?
What would "thank" a journalist? Being read by that kid?
What would "thank" a nurse? Seeing that kid discharged from the hospital?

I'm an architect. Building (new or remodel) is such a disruptive event for the owner, that at the end of a project, typically no one is happy--there are so many compromises, so many little disappointments, so much money (or so little). But when you go back, and see people doing thier job or living thier lives in your building, that's all the thanks I expect.

State worker: We're all highly overpaid and don't do an ounce of work. Just surf porn sites all day long. Take long breaks and lunches. Hmm.....charge our gas to the state till. Pul-lease!

You make a valiant point, and, I do take satisfaction in making people's day just by saying "Hi,' but, you'd be sick of it after 4-6 hrs.

Well it's still work, that means it's not going to be a party every minute. I'm sure days go by when people hardly even notice you, and that must suck. But every once in a while, there must be something or someone special that happens or comes in, and that's the little lift that gives it some meaning, no?

This is true.

i find alot of personal joy in my job..and that's all the personal thanks i want...but it would be nice for my profession to get some recognition for the important work we do

Personally, i think teachers should be given all the thanks in the world...going through highschool, i forged tight bonds with several of my teachers, who's wisdom and adivce have helped me out alot. They werent just mentors, but they were my friends also. I give teachers all the props in the world.

Hell, i'm a Deli Clerk at a grocery store. i cut meat for a living. without me, you people would never have cold cuts! :D

I must admit, well in school, I never like teachers,(gee, wonder why*cough*HOMEWORK?,)but, now, I WISH I could go back, and thank them. I'd do MUCH better in school if given the chance.

Agreed, Amelia. Being a Special Ed teacher is even worse. There's also a ton of paperwork and many meetings to go- almost like having to be a teacher and administrator as well...

Well, since this thread got a bump, just wanna say, nothing personal to lilminx & Ameilia,(although, I'm sure you knew that.)

Daycare workers. Totally thankless. Very, very low pay. Parents kick their kids in the door and leave us with them crying. Some stay with us over 8 hours a day for 5 days a week. We see these kids more than their parents.

I just put my three-year old twins in day care. They have been with me at home until now. I needed to start bringing in an income.

The women at the center I bring my girls seem to be happy to see them. My girls seem happy to see them, and the other kids at school.

I know it's low pay, but most of the girls that work at the center I bring my kids look college age and work part time. They seem to have a genuine interst in small children.

If you don't, I suggest you look for other work.

i worked in a day care center when i was in college..and loved it...!

i think the most important thing is not to blame the parents or think that just b/c they have to send their children to child care that they love them any less...

i always looked at the parents as my biggest partner...i figured..i'm gonna know the child..maybe one whole year...but..that parent is going to have that child for the rest of his/her life...so..a more important job would be to help/teach the parent to help/teach the child....and i got a lot of internal thanks for that..i feel good about my time spent working in child care

I used to work for a company that organized concerts and huge events. I worked on a tour for a pop star for a while (you'll just have to guess who) and I know that the staffers made everything happen. Everything. If we didn't show up, it would be chaos and hellish. But the guy's manager got all the props for it. The manager was an asshole (and has since been fired for embezzlement) and never did anything. I mean nothing. He just sat around and complained a lot. It was annoying to see him shaking hands with press people and them saying, "Wow, you really made this look smooth."

Thanks .....

Charlotte ... don't you just hate it when this happens? There is far too much of this about.

Amelia ... Lilminx ... do I take it that you are both teachers? I too am a teacher, teaching 11 - 19 year olds. I find that mostly it is a thankless job - there is precious little praise too. I suppose results are rewarding but it means such a lot to me when a student actually thanks me for a lesson, or says that it was "brill"!

I get plenty of "thanks" for being a teach, which is nice. It's a noble profession when done well and I kick-ass.

WHAT I WANT IS MORE MONEY!

hehehehe....
