I rarely play the part Suzy Homemaker but this weekend, I have simply been in the mood.
Yesterday, I made a double batch of IHOP style pancakes and while cooking them, I did most of the dishes (we had lots of dishes--mostly those giant things that don't fit in the sink and camping stuff). We ate our fill and the rest went into the freezer to be dropped in the toaster when we "need" more. (Great for PB&J sandwiches too!)
I then made a pot of slime (split pea soup) and got a pot ready for chicken/turkey and rice soup to drop on the stove when we leave for church this morning.
And, this morning, I got up and put together 2 loaves of pumpin bread. They are baking right now.

Anybody want a slice?

(Oh hey--for a handy suggestion--when you make a pot of soup like the above two--take the left overs and put them in a freezer baggie and lay it down flat to freeze. When done, you can stack the baggies like books on a shelf for those days when the drive through seems really really appealing! If it is a small baggie, you can lay it in the dash in the daytime to be hot and ready to eat by lunch time. Mmmmmmmm......)

Any of y'all got any suggestions for making it easier for the working and over busy person? (Had a job interview on sat and I think they liked me mucho--but 2 full time jobs and homeschooling is going to leave me strapped for time--I DON'T want to waste all my 2nd job money on eating out. Give me your ideas!)

I once had a friend who had to drive an hour and a half to work each day and he came up with the idea of cooking potatos on the exhaust manifold of his car, he wired a little metal basket to his manifold and wrapped the potato's in foil then put the potato in the basket and he worked out that by the time he got to work/home he'd have hot food.

You can actually buy little metal boxes to hook over the radiator or whatever to do this. Since I live near Houston though, solar cooking is less trouble. (And yes, we have done dashboard cooking for years--those swanson microwave pies do real well on the dash. So do corn dogs or any TV dinner or anything that is heat and eat.)

I only drive 10 minutes or so to and from work so radiator cooking is out anyway--Thanks for the suggestion (I would like to try it for a trip sometime though!)

I bet if you put a black tin box on a sunny dash you could cook alsort's

Usually, keeping a good set of thick gloves in the car is a good idea, they double as oven mits, and also protect your hands from hot steering wheels. If you want to heat something like soup, Handi Wipes are something that you can get in flat easy store containers and will double as napkins and clean up. A little metal plate when put on the dash can double as a toaster, cook surface, or heating pad. Travel mugs, if you get a metal one, can keep soup hot and will also do the same for coffee (make sure the metal is black for best heating, and get a plastic handle, and if you want to avoid using the afore mentioned gloves, wrap it in white electrical or medical cloth tape). clear tupperware containers (you can also get cheap sets of good containers at IKEA) are great for cooking things you want to be moist since they lock in the water, and serve as handy plates, and being clear, they are easy to identify the contents of. You can also keep a mini insulated tote in your trunk with bottles of soda or water, slip an ice pack in at the beginning of the day, after about half an hour the drinks are nice and cool, and you can take the ice pack into the house with you at night, throw it in the freezer and use it the next day. Getting Bottles instead of cans allows you to reclose them and toss them in, and you can refill them cheaply by buying 2 liter bottles and using a funnel.

Thank you, I do try. There are a couple more. Since fruits and vegtables are so easy to snack on and so good for you, you can cut up pieces and put them in the mini tote bag, which will also give you a cool snack and is great if you are hauling around kids (especially if you are at a family reunion, if they are chewing, they are not yelling above everyone). Another thing to do is get one of the small coffee pots that are reliant on having hot water instead of electricity, put a couple of bottles of water on the dash board (works best if wrapped with black electrical tape) and pour through. Keep the beans preground in a plastic bag in the mini insulated tote and just throw out everything. A couple of things that are great are 1. Keeping Ziploc bags in the car, the large ones, so you can use them to store, cook, or as garbage bags. 2. buy in bottles, reclosable, reusable, cheaper, easier. 3. Keep some snack foods (Granola bars for breakfast, Chex Mix for a snack) in the car with the clips that they sell for the bags, the bars will stay good in their packages, and both are great for eat on the go. And remember, if you do eat out, the napkins are free, just ask for extra at the drive through and stash them in the car so you can clean up.
