spotlight on...quoll!

Quoll was one of the very first people to respond to my posts when I started posting on HT, and I'll always be grateful that he made an effort (I originally typed "error" instead of effort, LOL!) to help me feel like part of the group. :rose:

Certainly not an error, I always admired your posting style, I must be a bit odd because I always understood what you meant and generally agreed with your opinions.
Considering you have probably been here longer than most of us if you count your lurking days it's not suprising you fitted in so well once you finally delurked.

And now for some questions:

If you had a yacht, what would you name it?
Romantically I would probably name it THE POSSUM.
But deep down inside I would want to call it the OMGPLEASEDON'TSINK.

What's in the trunk of your car right now?
Not a hell of a lot, a screwdriver set, a spanner set, wheel brace, air compressor, some spare car mats, an extra windcheater, a jack, a couple of shopping bags, a small portable dvd player that I "rescued" from the bin at the back of a Big W store and hopefully the missing cd containing the audio book The Good The Bad and The Undead by Kim Harrison

That was absolutely beautiful, Q. Thank you. Thanks for linking it, BG.
I have learned NOT drink anything when reading a post by Quoll unless I wish to douse my monitor with whatever happens to be in my cup.

Do you have a favorite season, and if so, what is it and why?

Probably autumn, I like walking in the mornings when it's frosty and foggy, sometimes I light a small fire and just spend some alone time there.

What inspired your Lit handle?

I tried many names but they were all taken and I hate having numbers after my name, so I thought obscure Aussie animals should be a safe bet.
I've always liked Quolls even though I've never seen one in the wild, plus it suited me in a lot of ways, uniquely Australian, quite shy and mostly nocturnal, but has a temper if cornered and also somewhat educational should people decide to look it up.

Besides qumpkins and conejitos del polvo, do you have an affinity for any other small, furry creatures? :D

I'm a big fan of otters and also the platypus, even though neither of them have desires for world domination.:D

Do you have any pets?

If you won the lottery, how would you spend the money?

Do you like ice cream? If so, what's your favorite flavor? If not, what's your favorite treat/dessert?

Why is it you guys have one of the world's best cricket teams and one of the world's best rugby teams, but your football team is godawful?

Actually I just had a great idea, not just turn up on their doorstep, but do it with a large bus, picking them up along the way, I might not know enough people to fill the bus but we'd have a blast.

Shamelessly does her best Donkey(from Shrek) imitation: Me, Me, pick Me! :D

Do you have any pets?

Not specifically mine, however I am senior custodian to one border collie kelpie cross called Sam (Samantha the sheep dog), one cat called Fluffy, (she isn't, she was named after middle Q's dog who died of snakebite) one cat called Ditty, (who is fluffy), but the littlest Q couldn't say kitty, and one cat called Champs, as in champagne. Also three or four chooks wandering about the place somewhere.

If you won the lottery, how would you spend the money?

Nothing much, new house with hidden rooms, secret panels, enclosed rainforest, indoor/outdoor pool with waterfall, perhaps the odd tunnel or two, domed viewing area and worlds best playground. One extremely large bus.
Help out some friends and family that have never asked for more than I could give.

Do you like ice cream? If so, what's your favorite flavor? If not, what's your favorite treat/dessert?

For ice cream I would have to say coffee, but my favourite dessert would probably be pavlova.

more questions:ed

what's the stupidest misconception you've ever heard about australia from a foreigner?

One of the biggest problems about Aussie misconceptions is that we start a lot of them, it's almost mandatory to tell visitors to be careful of these guys when walking in the bush. (see attached photo).
I did see someone on the GB comparing Australia to Manhattan Island the other day, considering there is very little difference in size between us and the U.S that's not a bad call.
I have heard people complain because there were no kangaroos at the airport.

what's your favorite recent practical joke?

I did tell my son that we might have to sell him if his operation did not work, that's what we had to do with his sister, "I don't have a sister" he said, "Not now" I replied.

Translation, please? Chooks?

Do you still have cows?

Umm, chooks lay cackleberries.:D

I'm afraid the cows had to go, we had gotten to the point of having to buy in food and water for them with very little prospect of things changing for the better.

Q-man, you are without a doubt one of the most special people I've ever encountered. I only wish time-travel was possible. BG and I often talk about our RV escape, hitting the road and doing whatever we want anytime we want. Obviously we'll need an amphibious vehicle.

You are loved.:rose:

pavlova? umm, what?

Hi Quoll!

As someone who never goes over to the GB or spends much time in the HT Cafe we've never spent much time on the same posts but clearly you are a veteran litster and held in high regard by many here.

One more thing before you go...

My question is this: as an experienced and esteemed poster(?) what do you think makes a good OP or reply?

:)

That Guy On My Iggy List said:
I couldn't possibly do it, (for long) your ability to engender misconception (sounds like a new type of birth control or a beauty pageant winner) in perfectly written posts (I don't know how you do it as I think you are probably one of the clearest writers here) has provided this board with some of the best entertainment we've ever had, and shone a light on some of the truly idiotic that live among us.

quoll, is there a skill or ability you do not currently possess, but wish you did--and if so, what is it?

I'm not a big follower of soccer, and I suspect that's part of the problem, it just doesn't have the large fan base it has over your way, small fan base = small sponsors = small money, and money to buy good players seems to be the way most professional sports are run these days.
Of course I could be completely wrong.;)

Of course'

No inference intended but that just reminded me of my favourite quote from Shrek 2.
Donkey: "I demand the right to be silent."
Shrek: "Donkey, you have the right, what you lack is the capacity."

Do you have a favorite movie? Or book?
I'm too erratic to have long term favourites, plus I don't get to see too many "grown up" movies. I do like Eldorado, I've only seen that a dozen or so times over the last few years, it hasn't got too old yet. The fifth element is one I quite like.

I used to be a rabid reader, now I'm a rabid listener while I'm driving.

Rather than favourite books I'll list some authors.

E.E.Doc Smith
Robert A Heinlein
Aurthur C Clarke
Julian May
Anne McAffrey
Robert G Barrett
Kim Harrison
James White
Andy McNab

Q-man, why did you pick purple for your responses? Is there a significance to the choice? Do you have a favorite comic? Who? Do you like milk? What about tofu? If you could be world champion of a sport, which would you choose? Why that one? Are you a morning or night person? Do you want me to shut up now? Why? I want to shut so I will! :D

I'm so sorry, Q-ey, she got loose from the straight jacket when I wasn't looking...

Come on, Cathleen, we have some nice milk and cookies for you back at the home...

:)

I'd like to deny some of your compliments but to do that would obviously imply some sort of mental shortcomings in the people who made them, as much as I don't completely understand some of them I couldn't do that so I wont.

For me it's a case of knowing your audience as far as opening posts go.
Given the choice of barging into a room full of people and shouting out the first thing that pops into your head or walking in quietly and just observing the general mood and dynamic of the people around me and waiting for the right time to politely ask a question, I'll go with option two.
Here in the HT, people won't validate shitty attitudes or behaviour, won't condone cheating and trickery, other areas of Lit may have a different view on that, so it's always good to know just where you are posting.

For replies,I try to read all posts so I know whether the conversation has moved on from the OP (and dates too, nothing worse than typing out a great reply only to find out the thread is three years old), don't assume or embellish, just reply to the facts given.
Generalisations are great if you want an argument, and lack of reading comprehension is bound to end up in ridicule.

If you are posting on the GB, just reverse everything I said.
Smilies are generally frowned upon on the GB, so I tend to use more than I normaly would when posting there.:D

In giving advice I tend to try and relate it to things that I have had some experience with, either good or bad (see above advice).

Q-man, why did you pick purple for your responses? It's the least offensive of the other colours available, plus I was once accused of being a girl because I had purple in my sig. Is there a significance to the choice? I believe that in the light of my prior response to your previous question this question and thus in a way this response is now redundant. Do you have a favorite comic? The Phantom Who? The Legend of The Phantom begins 400 years ago when the sole survivor of a pirate raid was washed up on a remote beach. Friendly pygmies found him and nursed him back to health.

One day while walking on the beach, the survivor found a dead pirate, dressed in his father's clothes. On the skull of his father's murderer, he swore an oath by firelight as the pygmies watched. "I swear to devote my life to the destruction of piracy, greed, cruelty and injustice, and my sons and their sons will follow me."

This was the Oath of the Skull that he and his descendants would live by. In time, the pygmies led him to the centre of the jungle where he found a large cave with many rocky chambers. The mouth of the cave, a natural formation created by the water and wind of centuries, was curiously like a skull. This skull formation reminded him of an altar he saw in the camp of the 'giant' natives (giant to the pygmies, that is!), when he aided in the pygmies' revolt. It gave him an idea which he later put into practice, and held onto as his 'trademark'.

This Skull Cave became his home. He and the sons who followed became known as the nemesis of pirates everywhere.

He is the mysterious man whose face no-one ever saw, whose name no-one knew. Natives of the Bangalli Jungle, thinking that all Phantoms are the same as the first, say he is immortal, a man who cannot die. Thus, twenty generations of Phantoms lived, fought and died, usually violently as they followed their oath. Coincidently, The Phantom wears a purple suit.
. Do you like milk? Love it, pure and unadulterated with all it's yummy fat intact. What about tofu? Absolutely, anything with a name that sounds so delicious must be good for you, BWAHAHAHAHAHA NO. If you could be world champion of a sport, which would you choose? Snooker. Why that one? It's one of the few sports where drinking and smoking is perfectly accetable during the game. Are you a morning or night person? Night. Do you want me to shut up now? No. Why? They say it's best to humour them. I want to shut so I will! :D Of course you do, go right ahead, whatever you want is fine with me.

An eidetic memory would be handy as would the ability to understand everything I read, but I've read the stories, seen the movies, these gifts usually end up driving the possessor insane or something because they can never forget all the terrible things they have seen and heard and I mean what good is an ability like that if it's going to drive you insane, so a clever person would forgo the aforementioned abilities, but not me, I'd just add the ability to selectively forget seeing as how we are wishing, you notice they never do that in the movies now do they.

Yeah, 'cuz those cookies have been recalled due to e.coli. You can't fool me, bg.

Q-man, I was on the phone with bg and she was the one to tell me what to post. It's really her post.;)

You are such a good sport for answering her crazy questions.
