Somehow, through this site, I've been 'spammed!'

It has to be through this site because
1) I didn't have the problem before i joined Lit, and
2) The last one i got said "MILF like you've never seen"..I had never even seen "MILF" before coming to Lit, and had to ask someone what it meant!!:D

Can someone tell me how I can stop this trash mail from coming?

I hate to burst your bubble, but unless you've publicily posted your email address, there is no way of obtaining it via LIT (unless LIT starts selling its mailing list).

You don't have to post it here, you could have posted it else, or forgot to set your details private in ICQ or Yahoo Messenger etc. It could have been gleemed from your system via spyware, or a benevolant worm. Lots of so called "Free programs", ie KAAZAA, come with extra little goodies that install without your knowledge and monitor all sorts of things about you. Heck, even your ISP isn't necessarily pure when it comes to selling mailing lists.

I average 200+ spams daily, but then my email address is posted on everypage of a fairly heavily visited website. Everything from porn, to nigerian scams to requests for Dimensional warp generators (look it up). Spam is a fact of life online. Unfortunately.

The first thing you need to do is download a good spyware scan like Ad-Aware and run it.

Next search this forum for threads. There is one about every two weeks for this very problem. That's where you will find the switches to turn off in Windows to stop anymore.

Good luck.

My bubble???

I hate to burst your bubble

Not a bubble, a fact...
I am quite aware of the spy ware on different software one can download....and I am not new to the computer, nor internet sites. I am not slamming Lit..it happens, and yes, it can even happen on Lit.

I simply wondered if anyone had a solution..I am amazed at how bent out of shape some people get when questions are asked. I think accusation is perceived by the interpretation, rather than meant by the presentation.;)

Thanks,
AmericanWench

PS..have no desire to "look it up".. but thanks!! :)

Thats the problem. Your asking for a solution when you haven't really defined the source of the spam.

From your own original post you claim it came as a result of your being here on lit. Since private email addresses are kept hidden by the bbs system, it would take a hack of Lit, or the Lit OPS selling your email address in order for lit to be the source of the email.

I suppose you can ask Lit if they are selling their mailing list. Lord knows its certainly big enough to warrant selling it. Heck I've got a list of nearly 10K known website owners and people have asked to buy that for nice chunks of change. Imagine what lit could get for selling their list. :D

It's really unlikely that Lit would have started selling the member list. Not impossible, but highly improbable.

Huh? This doesn't even make sense. Since when does Windows have any control over spam, let alone "switches" to stop it?!

Your original post did come across as accusatory. That may not be how you meant it, but that's definitely how it seemed to some of us. As for your computer prowess - if you know that much, then you should be able to figure out that it most certainly is possible that the source is elsewhere. As careful as you may think you've been, and even though you're suspect of the MILF bit, that's not much evidence to go on.

Then again if you have no desire to look it up, I guess it doesn't matter to you enough for me to keep babbling.

"look it up"

You need to read more carefully, dear. The term Ihad no desire to look up, had absolutely nothing to do with spam. As for accusing...sometimes, it is perceived more through interpretation, than meant through presentation...:)

Actually I told you to look up "Dimension warp generators" which will lead you to one of the more bizarre spam stories on the net. Shrugs :D
