Good morning Spacelings

A slow start to the day here - had a real tough time getting motivated to start working (though, as usual, doing better once I get rolling).

Hope everyone's Monday is moving at a good pace - for a Monday!

Retail shift-work is tough, especially in the bigger stores. I worked in a retail bookstore for a while, which I enjoyed. It was a small store though, back in the days before the big chains, so it was actually a pretty pleasant experience. It didn't pay much of anything, but the benefits (surrounded by books and book lovers) were excellent.

I enjoy the holidays. Whether they become frenetic or not depends entirely on the choices made. I tend to keep my celebrations and decorations and such low key and simple. That allows me to actually enjoy the holiday and not look at it as a hassle.

Exactly the opposite here - travelled to Asia for a conference this week, meaning I don't have the normal family activity things to keep a bit of a balance. Crawled into bed around 4am after working too much on prepping for the day, up at 7 wishing I had gone to bed earlier, struggle through a shower and desperately wanting to flop back on the hotel bed and play hooky. Scrambling through the day to speak to as many people as possible, then out late at a mandatory after-party. Walked back halfway across the city just to get some fresh air and clear the mind, only to arrive back at the hotel around 2am to do it all again.
When I'm travelling, the quiet and solitude of living out of a suitcase allows me to drift into very bad unhealthy habits.
Tomorrow is shaping up to be a whirlwind, and I guess I'll sleep well on the red-eye flight home, which doesn't take off until almost midnight.

Flying off to exotic locations for work is so glam

Good morning Azul, Ling, Starry and Paul. :) Even though it is totally not morning anymore, haha. I just haven't really started my day yet.

I worked retail through college. I remember how hectic it was. One I picked up a side job at Kay's Jewellers. Ugh, that was a mistake. The manager wanted to train me and made me go on an "overnight trip" with him to learn about diamonds.

I always wanted to work at a book store or library. Instead I just make good friends with the ones who do!

I just missed ya, I guess it would be good evening for you! I used to be a consultant who traveled a lot, it can be rough. Sounds like a busy week for you! Do you do that often?

Peeking in ...

Hello folks, I understand everyone's having a hard time getting going today. After all the being up late with a bonfire and yardwork. I had to hit up my favorite masseuse to get some kinks out before heading to clients. I feel for anyone in retail, especially with the holidays coming up.

Good luck Robed with the after-parties and need for rest!

Tiamo jewelry would pale next to your beauty, so good thing Kays was not in your future! ! :)

No - its really good early early morning now, about 4am. Body-clock hasn't moved around yet! Don't get me wrong, I love to travel - but I do tend to keep punishing hours, partly out of a misguided sense of trying to make the most of the time. Fully ware its self-inflicted, a bit like knowing its wrong to keep eating icecream straight from the container, but finishing it the whole container anyway 'cause nobody's watching :)

I'm doing a lot of it this year - 2 days here, 4 days there, back again three weeks later. On the upside, I'm pretty much caught up on all the latest movies!

I travel a lot for work as a consultant, not to mention keep weird work hours. I love it and have been doing it for quite a while now, but I often tell people that the idea of traveling is a lot better than actually traveling, especially after you've been at it for a while.

The hardest part of the cycles - when you go from destination to destination without touching home for an extended period. Things start to blur together, sleep cycles get chewed up, and you end up doing strange things at strange hours. If you're fortunate, you get to meet strange people. Still, I wouldn't trade it off. "I've seen things with your eyes..." (Bonus points if you love the movie and recognize the quote).

Working at the bookstore was pretty cool - the couple that owned the place made sure they hired book lovers, so there was always great conversation and great recommendations and it was always fun to serve the customers who were as excited about books as we were. Pay was low though, no way to make a living at it unless you were the owner.

I guess since I asked the question.....

As much as I enjoy the busy-ness of the fall months leading to Christmas, my favorite season is actually summer. I am a big fan of Memorial Day, Father's Day, July 4th only because they are not as pushed as the fall, winter and spring holidays

I have never done retail, but I used to work at a warehouse that supplied retail and August was always the start of the Peak season. Luckily if I ever needed a second job, I always went back to restaurant work only because I know how simple it can be once you learn the basics.

Tiamo, I am sure that you have heard almost every known pick up line from guys. Going on an overnight to learn about diamonds was probably the second most original bastardization of that category I have heard.

Starry, I feel for you. I do hope things get better for you. I'm still praying for you.

As for the fellas, i am glad to see you guys in here only because it does give me things to ponder when you're around putting in your thoughts.

Time to think about second job now. I hope everyone has a great night.

Bahaha. I had a job in the mall where I could run every morning (and get paid for it). He caught me on the treadmill and asked me to work for his store for the holidays. I hated it. The only good thing about the job was that I got to travel and learn all about diamonds and then became a diamond snob (now I'm a different person and don't need expensive diamonds). The other thing was that I realized how much they fleece their customers. Always bargain them down, way way down!

Another weird time was when my best friend asked me on another trip to a university to learn about Latin American studies, and he convinced me to sleep in the Observatory to watch the stars. I was seriously excited about that, too bad he totally ruined it.

Hope you had a good day with your massage. I have a favorite masseuse, she talks constantly about League of Legends with me. But last time, I was determined to not talk gaming or rock climbing (her favorite topics and ones I could converse about). I fell asleep on her!

That is the part I would hate about being a gorgeous woman. All these guys think they can pull that kind of line and stuff not knowing that just because a woman is gorgeous does not mean she doesn't have a good head on her shoulders also.

Power does corrupt and just because a person (because some women do it also.) can sell something doesn;t mean they can sell everything.

I've tried a huge mix of holistic stuff. Right now they are using the tape on the bicep & the back too. I've got my pain meds & muscle relaxers. I have some EO mixes (helichrysum, hemp & a couple other kids of oils), some script Volatren gel, I start back on acupuncture needles & cupping this week. The tear happened last Thanksgiving. surgery was end of April. The tear is huge but they didn't fix it since they figured it would scar & heal up. So far not happening. Last night pain wise was almost as bad as those first few days post surgery. So I am not sure if they will force me back into a sling... which will make packing even more special to move. Or wait till I tear it further & then more surgery?? I'm not liking any of this so far.

Yikes. Sounds very painful. Looks like your doing a good mix of healing plans. Hang in there.

Wow! It's been a busy day here today. I'll just say hi to everyone who's posted today, you've had interesting lives.

Good morning all.

It looks like a good week of both jobs and getting stuff done for me. So Tiamo had a good question about seasons . Here's a topic to think about:

What do you think about holidays in general and which is your favorite?

Oh my. Most are so commercialized I would love to avoid. My kids knew Christmas was about Christ and giving. On their birthday we celebrate them. Thanksgiving is for friends and serving others. Halloween was ruined when I was a kid by the fools poisoning and putting razors in candy, after that the church always had a huge community party. So my favorite July 4.

I haven't worked retail, but restaurants- fast food to fancy -waitress to cook. Always thought I would love to own a small place in a small town.

PT made me cry again today. That's 2 visits in a row but it's mucle knots in the torn bicep and they have to get worked out. So she digs and I suck air and tear up. It should be easier on Thursday since I see my needle Doc on Wednesday. MUCH easier to get unknotted with acupuncture needles then deep tissue digging.

I know this feeling very well. I had back problems many moons ago and had to see a chiropractor regularly. She would massage me once a week, and brought me to tears many a time.

Since I train a decent amount, I usually get a thai massage every 6-8 weeks. It hurts like hell and I feel like crap for the rest of the day, but once I've recovered I feel amazing.

Hang in the Starry! A severe tear is a long slow heal, even with surgery. You've got the right approach, working it with a variety of styles and techniques. My day finally turned productive but not until late in the afternoon. I'm still sitting here working actually and just took a break.

Tiamo - I think the best jobs are the ones where you get a chance to learn something. Before I landed in my current profession I did all kinds of weird things, kind of drifted from job to job and life to life. Consequently I know all kinds of weird things about all kinds of weird stuff. Surprisingly some of those weird things come in handy in my current profession.

It will be over soon I hope.

I am watching the newest video from Lady Gaga just because it's on and I am noticing it's a stripped down video. Have you ever had a time when you stripped down in a figurative sense and what happened?

Again, I'll share when I get home, ;)

Stops in for Coffee -waves Hi to Everybody -wishing you all a wonderful and Super Day:)

Got Coffee pot steaming ...

Stary thinking about you, hang in as best you know how. And let those tears flow if you need to.

I worked in a grocery store once and Super Bowl Sunday is their Black Friday! Of course I got stuck keeping the cola and chip aisle stocked ...

Thanks for the kind words everyone. I tried monitoring the use of that arm yesterday and how I slept with it too. The PT thinks I need to stop holding up like it was in the sling and just let it hang. Might be a thing since I hold my smarter than me phone in that hand. I was also used to holding it that was to read.

I'm having a talk with the needle Doc to see what he thinks. It's back to half knotted this morning already with just a shower and breakfast.

<<<Hugs starrynight>>>

Azul's Question of the day
Have you ever had a time when you stripped down in a figurative sense and what happened?
I can't think of anything in the figurative sense, but maybe in the literal sense! ;)

Ordered my costume. I couldn't get the Puddin Choker in purple, so I hope gold will be ok. I still have to get the bat and tattoos. I actually ordered two costume sets because one came with jacket attached with shirt (boo) and the booty shirts and fishnets. The other came with separate jacket and shirt (yay). If I get hot, that jacket is coming off.

Good Afternoon Spacelings - a much better day today than yesterday. I woke up and charged into the fray and yet still have time to stop for lunch.

Hi Azul, Dumpling, Starry, HotCPU and Tiamo!

Figuratively stripping down - for me it's kind of a continual process both physically and psychologically. Find the core of what matters to you and strip your life down to that core. I don't know about all of you but I am conscious of the amount of time and energy I waste on things that have no particular value to me. The negative side of the power habit. I try to live in a continual cycle of self-awareness (and I'm borderline OCD so I count and analysis all kinds of stuff as I go through a day). Then, I strip things down. I live a very physically minimalist life style and am slowly becoming even more minimalist. The things you own also own you in return. Freedom in this life is not just a mental state, but it's a physical state as well. In the words of that great philosopher Kris Kristofferson "Freedom's just another word for nothing left to lose...".

Tiamo - LOL - I am going to pick a piece of low hanging fruit here but - "If you get hot?". Ah, the great places my mind goes.

Starry - the last time I was in PT for a serious injury (six or seven years ago), I had a similar problem with my calf - I had to teach myself to not keep favoring it and limping. It was kind of constantly stretching it back out every time I was aware that I was protecting it. I think it is probably a little harder with the arm, but it's a similar type thing. In my case I had a spiral fracture (from a fall while climbing) of my lower right leg, along with a broken foot and torn knee. In my case, there was surgery to reattach muscles and tendons and then quite a bit of atrophy in the muscles by the time the bones had healed. It is a slow and patient and frustrating time, but it will get better.
