I love her music. I haven't heard anything from her in a long time.
I lucked out and got to see her live in a show for 4th of July in my town. It was a street show, so we could get right up to the stage. I was singing along with her songs and she leaned down when she was finished with one, and she gave me a big hug and told me thank you.
With her last album she was in a long dispute with the record label over her use of a banjo in one song. She wouldnt remove it and they wanted a poppier, more VH1 sound. The hang up led to a year long delay in release and she soured on the biz. Thats the last I heard about it, I do know her brother(I think) is also a musician and perhaps they are working together(I think they have in the past).
The Eels do a cover of 'Damn, I wish I was Your Lover' thays worth a look on Morpheus.
Idont know what she is up to. I saw her live and her music and her being is incredibly sensual. Oh what i would give to be a microphone for just one concert.
Dammit Rubes! I haven't heard Sophie in years, and I hadn't realized that I missed her!
Found a website though... apparently she released something in 2001... "An expanded edition of Timbre will be released April 24, 2001, on Rykodisc via Sophie's own imprint, Trumpet Swan Records. Each copy of Timbre will come with a bonus disc with 2 new songs, homes demos, remixes, and video enhancement, including 2 never-before-seen videos!"
And this is how I'm feeling today...
Stay up all night to feed your fire
My day's a dream with you on my mind
I wake up tight full of desire
And you are the one who can unwind
My weather's always a surprise
Don't think you'll ever come prepared
But love's the lighthouse in my life
If you get scared
The reason I was surprised was that Sophie was with another woman for a VERY long period of time. Is that how Rosie meets women? I mean she has them on her show and then they MEET? Anyway, Hawkins is a GREAT singer and I miss hearing her sing.
I've always been more impressed with Sophie Hawkins as a personality then with her music -- not that her music is not good or memorable, but she is just SO sexy and appealing that her beauty and notoriety just overwhelm the actual sound of her work. Sort of like Kate Bush in that respect, or a number of other artists of both genders that have striking physical beauty. Reminds me of the question once posed by Dr. Johnny Fever -- "Wanna go look at some Carly Simon album covers?"
