Some records are stored on microfiche. It's a time and manpower intensive search. Given enough manpower, they can turn an "emergency request" around in one day.

Fucking Libertarians et al have stood against any and all attempts to computerize the records of firearms sales, because it is illegal to sell to a "mentally ill" person and a significant minority of Libertarians exhibit one or more symptoms of severe mental illness.

Anyway, a team was dispatched to comb through the millions of records.

Then the Secret Service got an unexpected gift: the knockoff piece-of-shit rifle was manufactured right here in the Good Ole USA, and the manufacturer had computerized records of all sales (if the steel peener substitute had been made in Eastern Europe or China the agents would likely still be searching records).

So, the manufacturer said they sold the rifle to some shithole gun store in Pennsylvania in 2013. The gun store closed a few years later.

This turned out to be a turning point, because "closed gun store sales" are NOT stored in the general records facility, but instead are stored in plastic tubs in another location. The individual plastic tub was located and after a couple of hours of poring over invoices they found the bill of sale to the shooter's libertarian daddy. They thought daddy might be the shooter but the ID used to purchase the weapon made him too old. So they went and knocked on his door and asked him if he had a son.

Funny I just read yesterday that the father called the police as soon as it happened because he was suddenly concerned where his son was and where his gun was.

Unlike you, I have the FREEDOM to be dumb if I choose to act that way. Mainly because, also unlike you, I'm not limited by a lack of intelligence or intellect.
 
According to NBC the parents of the shooter called the police hours before the shooting to report their son missing with along with one of his father's guns.

By law the ATF is not supposed to have a registry of firearm serial numbers. It wasn't too long ago the Director of the ATF testified under oath that no such registry existed and the one that did exist had been destroyed by court order.
