It good if you don't get caught, but better if you profit by it.

Hmm are you working the middle east back into this with those sly cat remarks.

No, I completely understand that line of thought, but doing it for any sort of motive ups the likelihood that you're goig to get caught.

This thing puts me in the mind of the "What's the worst thing we could do and not get caught". It's a senseless series of acts and that's what makes it perfect.

Heh. Persians. Fucking Persians. ;)

And yeah, the .223 is a dirt-common caliber for hunting rifles. Maryland and Virginia are states rife with hunters. That's gotten even more common with the rampant deer overpopulations (such that in over half the state there's no bag limit on the number of antlerless deer you can take, to try to limit the out of control population).

The pefect crime is the crime you can commit without getting caught. Letting motive come into play only increses the likelihood that you'd get caught. Stealing money is a great motive and leads to all sorts of suspects. Random killings are apparently motiveless so the police don't have a suspect list from which to work.
There's a motive, and it's in play. There's virtually no chance that the perp is female. The fact that the media can't see a pattern or relationship should not be construed to suggest this is was some sort of perfect crime - he's already making mistakes.

I agree with this! The fact that the media can not discern the perpetrator's mistakes, does not mean that the authorities have not noted them. I am sure that they have. They just won't tell us, because to do so would tell the perp. I am glad the media are not in charge of the investigation. This is a terrible situation up there. I hope they catch him soon.

That there's virtually no chance of that comes exclusively from the perp profile that's been developed. I'm not deriving my information solely from the media, though. I have other sources from which I get a lot of my information on this.

Right now, there's not a discernible motive. Well, I shold restate that. Every criminal action has motive, even if it's reflexive. This crime at present doesn't have a motive that will help to any large degree in solving the crime.

With all due respect to you and your sources, the crime DOES have a motive which will likely prove fundamental to identifying him. The fact that there's none being reported is only indicative of how little the media knows.
