Philosophically, why should it be more difficult to walk from Mexico to California than is is from Arizona to California? What's the point in having strong borders?

Because Arizona is a state in the union, Mexico is not.

What's the point in having strong borders?

The same point as having a government or a nation in the first place....control, security, structure.

So, your basic question is, why bother having countries. It’s an old weathered utopian ideal of socialists. Their main goal is not the elimination of governments and their borders, but the imposition of one big socialist world government from which there is no escape. We need borders to protect our countries beliefs and goals, to protect the individual freedoms we enjoy, and to self determine our future success. Your not liking that is not our problem.

You mean globalists?

You guys keep using the term "socialism" for things that have nothing to do with it.
Such an intellectual cacophony on your part ...

The same people who advocate for globalism also support the transnational corporations that you support.

Well, I'll address a response from you that is to the actual situation I asked instead of the one you decided to answer.

However, allow me to point out that the US has had state to state immigration for centuries and I'm only asking why we can't extend that same level of access to all countries.

That's what the EU has with the Schengen agreement. Apart from EU citizens being able to live and work in any EU country it means that terrorists and criminals can be in a different country in a few hours.

Because states aren't countries dude. You really think it's a good idea for people to just wander across national borders however and whenever they want? You don't see a problem with this?

I always laugh when I see one of those bumper stickers on the back of a Prius saying simply ‘Coexist’. The basic nature of humans (and of all living things), is competition. The law of the jungle, natural selection, survival of the fittest.. these are the descriptions of how the real world works. We in America have agreed to some basic principles that permit operating amongst each other with some minor agreements on how we’re going to provide for the freedom to do those things you want, and limiting the government intervention to only the most essential via a Constitution. We fought a major civil war about the form of that government (federal with heavy central control, or the confederate with diversified local control centered on the states being decentralized control). We’re still fighting that battle, and although we started under the Articles of Confederation, now suffer with heavy handed federalism as an outcome of that war. It’s not over yet. Larger countries eventually ALL run into this issue in one form or another. The USSR dissolved, the Roman Empire broke down as did Greecian city-states.... even tiny Belgium and sparsely populated Canada have deep divisions based simply on language (Canada English vs French, Belgium French vs Flemish). The EU is also imploding, with Brexit being a most recent example. It’s been the dream of socialists for one world order, but they have utopian dreams, not the depth of understanding of human nature to know humans are like radioactive materials, too much of which becoming collated reaches critical mass. Explosive results in each case

A minor point: The UK (and Ireland plus a few other countries) are not part of Schengen, although a small number of non EU countries are, namely Iceland, Switzerland, Norway, Lichtenstein.

The UK is part of the Common Travel Area which is an agreement with Ireland.

Just like that socialist who called for a new world order? That socialist?

You are one stupid fucker, binky. :)

It is virtually impossible to walk from AZ to CA. There is something called The Grand Canyon which would have to be crossed. It is very simple to walk between CA and Mexico, if your papers are in order.

The Grand Canyon for the most part does not border California and Arizona although there is the trickle left of the Colorado River that we haven't diverted that you do have to swim across.

The canyon itself can in fact be traversed on the foot from rim to rim at several locations. I've done most of it. When you end up crossing the Grand Canyon you find yourself in - Arizona still.

I didn't say it was impossible to walk from AZ to CA; I said it was virtually impossible. In other words, it would be extremely difficult. Traversing the Grand Canyon on foot would be extremely difficult. There are some bridges that pass between the two states, but are pedestrians permitted to use them? And swimming is not walking.

At the same time, a person with the proper papers can easily walk from Tijuana into San Diego.

Hey dumbass, the Grand Canyon is in the northwest corner of AZ. It doesn't even border CA. You can go from 90% of AZ to CA without ever even seeing it and NOBODY in CA is gonna see it cuz it's near the AZ/NV border. Not to mention it just ain that fucking big!! Seriously, look at a fucking map.
Holy fucking shit.

Arizona has a West Coast way south of the honking Grand Canyon of the North. It's called the Colorado River. More than a few bridges traverse it. I have walked bridges across it. Didn't even have to dodge drunk drivers.

But it wasn't always easy.
Well, lots of folks back east, they say,
Are leavin' home most ev'ry day,
Beatin' the hot old dusty way
To the California line.

'Cross the desert sands they roll,
A-getting out of that old dust bowl,
They think they're going to a sugar bowl,
But here's what they find:

Well, the police at the port of entry say,
"You're number fourteen thousand for today."

Oh, if you ain't got the do-re-mi, boys,
If you ain't got the do-re-mi,
Well you'd better go back to beautiful Texas,
Oklahoma, Georgia, Kansas, Tennessee.

California is a garden of Eden,
A paradise to live in or see.
But believe it or not,
You won't find it so hot,
If you ain't got the do-re-mi.

If you want to buy a home or farm,
That can't do nobody harm,
Or take your vacations
By the mountains or sea,

But don't swap your old cow for a car,
You'd better stay right where you are;
Well you'd better take this little tip from me.

'Cause I look through the want ads every day,
But the headlines on the papers always say:

If you ain't got the do-re-mi, boys,
If you ain't got the do-re-mi,
Well you'd better go back to beautiful Texas,
Oklahoma, Georgia, Kansas, Tennessee.

California is a garden of Eden,

If you ain't got the do-re-mi.
Kind of rings true today, 80 years (4 generations) later.

Anyhow, the easy way from Mexico to USA is via Puerto Rico, Quebec, or Ontario.

No escape from a world government? What is your escape plan with what we have now? Antarctica?

A little weak in geography.
There is the Colorado River, however. Nice bridge at Needles.
