Should women soldiers be used in combat?

I'm in the Marines. I know women are mentally and physically capable.

My fear is the effect on morale when they are taken POW's.

Also, how would people feel if the ladies got pregnant in a combat environment? (not raped)

Serious question. I'm curious what people think.

I don't know enough about military life to recognize all the potential problems, but my gut response is sure, if they want to be, why not?

There is no reason, excepting those that stem from the patriarchal thinking of males, why a woman shouldn't serve in a combat unit.

Well now that's an interesting thought. No doubt it would happen.

Leave it to a marine to think of that! :D

used?? I dont think you can call it used when they signed up to defend their country.

I would say they should be proud of themselves.

Sorry. How 'bout "Should they be 'utilized' in combat?"

I think any person who volunteers for an armed service knows what they are getting into, and should be used to the fullest extent of thier ability.

Rhonda Cochran (?) ex PoW from Gulf 1 was just discussing this issue on CNN.

Women aren't safe anywhere, to some degree. She said her concern wasn't for rape, but for whether or not she would be alive, disabled or freed.

Women should be serving anywhere they like or are able.
By doing so, they have given informed consent to accept the risks.

:)

I agree... No one forces you to raise your hand these days...

One argument is that when women become fighters it introduces a whole new category of potential combatants to the battlefield.

Yeah, that's pretty much what I think too.

I hate talking about this - so this is it for me.

I worry about that poor girl POW - she is so vulnerable in ways it doesn't bear thinking about.

In turn, her fellow soldiers may be put in terrible positions because of her vulnerability.

It's a situation unique to having females in the fighting force - and so a fact of theit lives - sadly.

umm...help me please. I'm missing the point.

The nature of war.....

Requires all personnel to be skilled in combat arms, females included. The only glitch I can think of is the physiological differences, like climbing and heavy equipment patrols.
Females generally have lower body strength, Males generally have upper body strength.
Most tasks in a LRRP or SF Team require extensive climbing, and packing of equipment. (upper body strength)
Females are great shooters and exhibit Hoah/Oorah attitudes.

I've had superior female officers that would do well in or out of combat arms.

Just my observation, not an opinion.

I don't see why the idea would be all that new. History has many examples of female combatants...like Queen Candace of Ethiopia, and Hatshepsut of Kemet.

Isn't that what soldiers do, fight?

Why do soldiers fight? One answer is hidden in the word soldier itself. Its first recorded occurrence is found in a work composed around 1300, the word having come into Middle English (as soudier) from Old French soudoior and Anglo-Norman soudeour.

The Old French word, first recorded in the 12th century, is derived from sol or soud, Old French forms of Modern French sou. There is no longer a French coin named sou, but the meaning of sou alerts us to the fact that money is involved. Indeed, Old French sol referred to a coin and also meant “pay,” and a soudoior was a man who fought for pay. This was a concept worth expressing in an era when many men were not paid for fighting but did it in service to a feudal superior.

People who do not want to fight should not seek employment in the military - there are many, many other options open to them. Soldiering is probably the next most dangerous profession to farming.

i don't think they should
when i think of that girl hostage, and i see how scared she looks, i get sick to my stomach
you know they're going to do awful things to her...there are some things a woman should not experience...nor males, but ...it makes me sick to think about what they'll do to her...and how often..to all of them, i hate all this stuff...i can't stand human human suffering of any form
why can't the world just be peaceful
why can't everybody just care about each other
it's alot easier to do, saves lives, costs less

For example, if Iraq started arming women, soldiers might be more likely to shoot at one, not knowing ahead of time if she'd "signed up."

***Note, I'm just using Iraq as an example, I'm not trying to introduce that subject to this thread!

I think they all look scared and young and vunerable...

I also heard a piece on NPR about how the Pentagon is getting reports that Iraq may be arming children to fight ... That makes me ill...

Equal rights is equal rights. The shitty ones come with the good. Send 'em.

Should women be given the same right as men, and fight in combat, the answer IMO si'.
