Morning all,

Is there any way for an author here to find out what OTHER authors might have him/her listed on their favorites in their profiles?

Personally, I'd love to know which authors have me listed in their own profiles (there might be one or two  ).

Any guidance would be appreciated.

Thanks,

I don't know of any. I know of two people who have added me to theirs, but I happened upon them by chance.

Manu posted a couple of days ago that they're working on a Favorites portal thingy. It listed the top 250 authors on Favorites lists. I don't think it had anywhere to find out who's list an author was on, though.

Nope.

I erased my favorites list when the Portal was announced. The whole idea creeps me out.

Not being contrary, but I don't understand the whole paranoia thing about the favorites list.

Me neither. I just hate favorites lists. I did one, once, the second week I was here, and I haven't touched it again until this week. Much has changed since then, you know? I've read more, seen more. I can't be worrying about it. Now that it's public and all over the shop, I have to update or dump, so I dump. Lazy.

Well, I did erase mine Cloudy but I wouldn't go as far as to say I was paranoid about it. ;)

In fact I do like the idea that someone else can discover and enjoy an author they didn't know through my favorites list. The problem I have with favorites being public is that they point out non-favorites by their absence on the list. That absence might be because I don't like the style of an author but it might also be because I don't like the categories he usually writes for (even though I might enjoy the writing itself). It could also be because I haven't read any or enough of their stories to include him into my favorites. Maybe I just haven’t updated my list?

I just don't like the fact that it automatically implies there are non-favorites and that I might hurt someone’s feeling unintentionally.

Since we don’t know each other, I’ll take us as an example and no-one will get hurt. To everyone who reads this: I don’t know Cloudy and for all I know not being on someone’s favorites list might not upset her at all, it’s just an example. I haven’t read anything of yours yet Cloudy. I enjoy your posts and you’re on my “to read list” chances are I’ll get around to it with your Magic in America entry but I haven’t done it yet. Now lets say I’ve been posting more actively than I have and a friendship has started to develop between us. You stumble upon my favorites list and discover that it’s a very thorough list that I obviously keep updated. You like the choices I’ve made there but can’t help to feel a little pinch to your heart when you find out you’re not on it…

A couple of months down the line, when a have a few stories posted myself, would I be hurt to find out I’m not on someone’s list? No, without hesitation. But I do know there are people out there who might feel a little hurt by being excluded and it’s so easy for me to prevent that. So I erased my favorites and keep the links in my browser instead. It is a personal choice and note that other authors whose work I enjoy have allowed me to discover writers I didn’t know. And I am thankful for their favorites being public because of this. I’m just keeping mine for myself.

Okay, I can understand that. I was genuinely puzzled. Thanks for explaining it to me (I can be a little dense sometimes ;) )
