I like Rakim but I'm a bit too young for all that 80s business![]()

Jay Z, Ja Rule and nice rnb crossover rap happened. Brought out the worst in the likes of Dmx and Nas.
Then 50 cent came along and single handedly ruined hip hop.

*tossing lil wayne in there as well*
#missingrealhiphop

The worst in the likes of Nas? Guessing you weren't a fan of "Ether" then.
Not sure you can put the ruination of the hip hop genre all on 50 either...I don't see how a few club hits could destroy a whole industry but what do I know...![]()
LOVE!!
Ether was a great track, but the stillmatic album was pretty poor and it was all downhill from there, for me personally.
It wasn't really the club hits with 50 cent, it was the constant barrage of records containing the exact same content then the mainstream exposure of his rnb tracks. 'Rap' was a dying art at that stage, especially to the MTV generation.
All option of course.
*Chuckles*
Why the hate on the dirty South?![]()
cause you funk like that...you're down like that.
*smiling at papadoc* no hate, my love. lil wayne alone didn't ruin hip-hop, i'm just not a fan.
for me, the downfall wasn't because of the south, north, east or west. the genre of hip-hop died for me when the message and image became all about contempt for women, expensive cars and money. there was a time when hip-hop was a movement: it was fun, it was political and it wasn't about gaining "platinum" status; it was about getting the message out there.
krs-one & common...they're hip-hop (to me). lil wayne & kanye...they're just rappers. [at the end of the day, when they've retired to their mansions, lil wayne and kanye could care less about what i think of them.]
hip-hop today seems commercialized, but i feel that way about music in general.
So you wanna play with magic
Boy, you should know what you're falling for
Baby do you dare to do this?
Cause I’m coming at you like a dark horse
Are you ready for, ready for
A perfect storm, perfect storm
Cause once you're mine, once you're mine
There’s no going back...
And now I have Katy Perry stuck on my head.
What are you complaining about?
