I'll have to join the not a fan of public play crowd. Or at least, the in view of public crowd. I find overt displays in public by others to be offensive, so I prefer to not subject the public to my affections. This only applies to the general vanilla public of course.
I've played at play parties and clubs and I don't count that as in public per se. I don't get anything special out of having an audience. I'm self conscious in front of a group. More likely to check my reactions and I have a harder time putting my head in the right place. That being said, the right group/audience can be very supportive.
