This thread has been going for a while now so I'll chime in
In the piston driven fighter category the most elegant radial engine design was the Folke-Wulf 190. For the liquid cooled designs it was the P51 (with the Spitfire an arguably close second).
In the medium bomber category is was the Mosquito, bar none. The Douglas B-26 (not to be confused with the Martin B-26) was second.
In the jets it was the F-86b in the fighter category , the B-47 in the medium bomber category and a toss up between the Avro Vulcan and the B1b in the heavy bombers.
Yes the modern designs are cool, but most are designed to be areodynamically unstable which makes them look somewhat strange as well. The F-22 is an exception except for those outlandish vertical stabilizers. Kinda like a 5'2 chick with 42DD tits.
When it comes to commercial/private aviation they're all over the map. Roll the dice and take your chances. But in the medium twin prop driven I always liked the lines of the Aero Commander and the Mitsubishi MU2.
