Powerful song lyrics

Ever run across a song where the lyrics were so powerful that they evoked stong emotions, often to the point of tears? If you know of such songs, please share the title and artist, and the lyrics if possible. I ran across this one by Tom Rush. It's from the 60's I believe and the words just seem to jump out and grab you:

"No Regrets"

I know your leavin's too long overdue
For far too long I've had nothin' new to show to you
Goodbye dry eyes, I watched your plane
Fade off west of the moon
And it felt so strange to walk away, alone

No regrets, no tears goodbye
Don't want you back, we'd only cry, again
Say goodbye, again

The hours that were yours, echo like empty rooms
The thoughts we used to share, I now keep alone
I woke last night and spoke to you,
Not thinking you were gone
It felt so strange to lie awake, alone

No regrets, no tears goodbye
Don't want you back, we'd only cry, again
Say goodbye, again

Our friends have tried to turn my nights to day
Strange faces in your place can't keep the ghosts away
Just beyond the darkest hour,
Just behind the dawn
Still feels so strange to lead my life, alone

I've no regrets, no tears goodbye
Don't want you back, we'd only cry, again
Say goodbye, again

I'll Stay With You
By: BETH HART
From the CD: LEAVE THE LIGHT ON

Yes I'll stay with you
I'll stay with you
Yes I'll stay with you
I'll stay with you

Close your eyes and I'll hold you here
It's all right if you're feelin' scared
It's just the sound of your aching heart
You've hurt for so long inside the dark
You can cry for the world out there
Come inside and I'll kiss your tears
It's still the sound tearing you apart
Loving out loud with only half a heart

Yes I'll stay with you
I'll stay with you
I won't leave you alone
I'll stay with you yes I want to
Make your pain my own
And if you need me all night or until I grow old
No you don't have to ask me to
I wanna take good care of you
Yes I'm gonna stay with you

And I'll be right at your fingertips
Just hold on tight and we'll get through this
Angels are calling from all around
Lifting what's broken comforting what is bound
Now you can rest in your time of need
I am here when it's hard to breathe
If you can't remember what is good anymore
Then I will surrender and kick down heaven's door

Yes I'll stay with you
I'll stay with you
I won't leave you alone
I'll stay with you yes I want to
Make your pain my own
And if you need me all night or until I grow old
No you don't have to ask me to
I wanna take good care of you
Yes I'm gonna stay with you

Yes I'll stay with you
I'll stay with you
I won't leave you alone
I'll stay with you yes I want to
Make your pain my own
And if you need me all night or until I grow old
No you don't have to ask me to
I wanna take good care of you
Yes I'm gonna stay with you

You don't have to ask me to
I wanna take good care of you
Yes I'm gonna stay with you

This one just breaks my heart to think what she had to go through to write a song like this.

Leave The Light On
By: BETH HART
From the CD: LEAVE THE LIGHT ON

I seen myself with a dirty face,
I cut my luck with a dirty ace
I leave the light on
I went from zero to minus ten
I drank your wine then
I stole your man
I leave the light on,
I leave that light on.

Daddy ain't that bad he just plays rough
I ain't that scarred when I'm covered up
I leave the light on
Little girl hiding underneath the bed was it something I did
Must be something I said
I leave the light on, better leave the light on.

I wanna love
I wanna live
I don't know much about it
I never did 17 and I'm all messed up inside
I cut myself just to feel alive
I leave the light on 21 on the run
on the run on the run from myself

From myself and everyone
I leave the light on, I leave the light on
Better leave the light on.

Cause I wanna love
I wanna live
I don't know much about it
I never did,
I don't know what to do, can the damage be undone
I swore to God that I'd never be what I've become
Lucky stars and fairy tales
I'm gonna bathe myself in a wishin' well
Pretty scars from cigarettes
I never will forget, I never will forget
I'm still afraid to be alone
wish that moon would follow me home
I leave the light on
I ain't that bad I'm just messed up
I ain't that sad but I'm sad enough
God bless the child with the dirty face who cuts her luck with a dirty ace
She leaves the light on, I leave that light on

I danced with my dad to this song at my wedding and every time I hear it, it makes me cry.

Butterfly Kisses

There's two things I know for sure:
She was sent here from heaven and she's
daddy's little girl.
As I drop to my knees by her bed at night
She talks to Jesus and I close my eyes and
I thank God for all the joy in my life
Oh, but most of all
For butterfly kisses after bedtime prayer;
sticking little white flowers all up in her
hair; "Walk beside the pony, Daddy, it's my first ride."
"I know the cake looks funny, Daddy, but I sure tried."
With all that I've done wrong I know I must
have done something right to deserve a hug
every morning and butterfly kisses at night.

Sweet 16 today
She's looking like her mama a little more everyday
One part woman, the other part girl.
To perfume and make-up from ribbons and curls.
Drying her wings out in a great big world.

But I remember
Butterfly kisses after bedtime prayer; sticking
little white flowers all up in her hair.
"You know how much I love you, Daddy, but if you
don't mind, I'm only gonna kiss you on the cheek this time."
With all that I've done wrong I must have done
something right to deserve her love every morning
and butterfly kisses at night.

All the precious time
Like the wind, the years go by.
Precious butterfly.
Spread your wings and fly.

She'll change her name today.
She'll make a promise and I'll give her away.
Standing in the bride-room just staring at her.
She asks me what I'm thinking and I say "I'm not
sure. I just feel like I'm losing my baby girl."
Then, she leaned over and gave me butterfly kisses with her mama there,
Sticking little white flowers all up in her hair.
"Walk my down the aisle, Daddy -- it's just about time."
"Does my wedding gown look pretty, Daddy? Daddy, don't cry!"

Oh, with all that I've done wrong I must have
done something right.
To deserve her love every morning and butterfly
kisses. I couldn't ask God for more. Man, this is what love is.

I know I gotta let her go, but I'll always remember
every hug in the morning and butterfly kisses at night.

Staind "Mudshovel"

You take away
I feel the same

You take away
I feel the same
All the promises you made to me you made in vain
I lost myself inside your tainted smile again

Cause you can't feel my ANGER
You can't feel my pain
You can't feel my torment
Driving me insane
I can't fight these feelings they will bring you pain
You can't take away
Make me whole again

I feel betrayed
Stuck in your ways
And you rip me apart
With the brutal things you say
I can't deal with shit anymore
I just look away

Cause you can't feel my ANGER
You can't feel my pain
You can't feel my torment
Driving me insane
I can't fight these feelings they bring only pain
You can't take away
Make me whole again

Mudshovel

You take away
I feel the same
All these promises
You promised only pain
If you take away
And leave me with nothing again

'Cause you can't feel my ANGER
You can't feel my pain
You can't feel my torment
Driving me insane
I can't fight these feelings they will bring you pain
You can't take away
Make me whole again

You will feel my anger
You will feel my pain
You will feel my torment
Driving you insane
I can't fight these feelings they will bring you pain
You won't take away
I'll be whole again

Paul Overstreet

I heard this song a couple of months after my Gramma passed away and I still cry when I hear it. The last verse is very appropriate too because I was an unmarried Mom at 16 and met my husband,we got married and he adopted her.
Love Helps Those by Paul Overstreet

Grandma she don't really get around good anymore
In fact to get her out the house is really quite a chore
But every day somebody seems to find a time to stop
To see if grandma needs something from where they go to shop
'Cause you see

CHORUS: Love helps those who cannot help themselves
It cares about those hearts that's been put up on a shelf
It will introduce a lonely soul to a lonely someone else
Love helps those who cannot help themselves

Mr.Johnson has a small farm down in southern Tennessee
But one year he took ill before the time to plant to seed
And no one knows which neighbour planted or they just won't tell
But he had his best crop ever by the time that he got well
'Cause you see

(REPEAT CHORUS)

A little helpless baby child was born into this world
She didn't have a daddy and her mother was just a girl
But there came a young man willing to give both of them a home
The girl he married the child he cherished though she was his own
'Cause you see

(REPEAT CHORUS)

My wife and I worked a show a long time ago which featured this song. It's always been special, but we'd never danced to it until this summer at a wedding.

The way you look tonight
Frank Sinatra

Some day, when I'm awfully low
When the world is cold
I will feel a glow just thinking of you
And the way you look tonight

Yes, you're lovely, with your smile so warm
And your cheeks so soft
There is nothing for me but to love you
And the way you look tonight

With each word your tenderness grows
Tearin' my fear apart
And that laugh..wrinkles your nose
Touches my foolish heart

Lovely ... Never, never change
Keep that breathless charm
Won't you please arrange it ? 'cause I love you
Just the way you look tonight

And that laugh that wrinkles your nose
It touches my foolish heart

Lovely ... Don't you ever change
Keep that breathless charm
Won't you please arrange it ? 'cause I love you
a-just the way you look tonight

Mm, Mm Mm, Mm,
Just the way you look tonight

Turn down the lights, turn down the bed
Turn down these voices inside my head
Lay down with me, tell me no lies
Just hold me close, don’t patronize - don’t patronize me

Chorus: cause I can’t make you love me if you don’t
You can’t make your heart feel something it won’t
Here in the dark, in these lonely hours
I will lay down my heart and I’ll feel the power
But you won’t, no you won’t
’cause I can’t make you love me, if you don’t

I’ll close my eyes, then I won’t see
The love you don’t feel when you’re holding me
Morning will come and I’ll do what’s right
Just give me till then to give up this fight
And I will give up this fight
Chorus: cause I can’t make you love me if you don’t
You can’t make your heart feel something it won’t
Here in the dark, in these lonely hours
I will lay down my heart and I’ll feel the power
But you won’t, no you won’t
’cause I can’t make you love me, if you don’t

Bonnie Riatt

No need to explain further I assume.... this is exactly how it went at one time... Although I'm so over the guy now.... this song can still make me cry.

The one that makes me always cry is jonny cash's cover of hurt... I'm not sure if its just the lyrics or the emotion as he sings it, especially knowing he is practically dying during the time of recording.. Very emotional..

A lot of Jeff Buckley Songs always have a lot of emotion in them too.. i'll post a couple for ya (the first was orginally done by leonard cohen, but buckley altered it a little)

Hallelujah

( Leonard Cohen )

I heard there was a secret chord
That david played and it pleased the lord
But you don't really care for music, do you
Well it goes like this the fourth, the fifth
The minor fall and the major lift
The baffled king composing hallelujah

Hallelujah, hallelujah, hallelujah, hallelujah ....

Well your faith was strong but you needed proof
You saw her bathing on the roof
Her beauty and the moonlight overthrew you
She tied you to her kitchen chair
She broke your throne and she cut your hair
And from your lips she drew the hallelujah

Hallelujah, hallelujah, hallelujah, hallelujah .... .

Baby i've been here before
I've seen this room and i've walked this floor
I used to live alone before i knew you
I've seen your flag on the marble arch
But love is not a victory march
It's a cold and it's a broken hallelujah

Hallelujah, hallelujah, hallelujah, hallelujah ....

Well there was a time when you let me know
What's really going on below
But now you never show that to me do you
But remember when i moved in you
And the holy dove was moving too
And every breath we drew was hallelujah

Well, maybe there's a god above
But all i've ever learned from love
Was how to shoot somebody who outdrew you
It's not a cry that you hear at night
It's not somebody who's seen the light
It's a cold and it's a broken hallelujah

Hallelujah, hallelujah, hallelujah, hallelujah ....

Lover, you should've come over

Looking out the door i see the rain fall upon the funeral mourners
Parading in a wake of sad relations as their shoes fill up with water
And maybe i'm too young to keep good love from going wrong
But tonight you're on my mind so you never know

When i'm broken down and hungry for your love with no way to feed it
Where are you tonight, child you know how much i need it
Too young to hold on and too old to just break free and run

Sometimes a man gets carried away, when he feels like he should be having his fun
And much too blind to see the damage he's done
Sometimes a man must awake to find that really, he has no-one

So i'll wait for you... and i'll burn
Will I ever see your sweet return
Oh will I ever learn

Oh lover, you should've come over
'Cause it's not too late

Lonely is the room, the bed is made, the open window lets the rain in
Burning in the corner is the only one who dreams he had you with him
My body turns and yearns for a sleep that will never come

It's never over, my kingdom for a kiss upon her shoulder
It's never over, all my riches for her smiles when i slept so soft against her
It's never over, all my blood for the sweetness of her laughter
It's never over, she's the tear that hangs inside my soul forever

Well maybe i'm just too young
To keep good love from going wrong

Oh... lover, you should've come over
'Cause it's not too late

Well I feel too young to hold on
And i'm much too old to break free and run
Too deaf, dumb, and blind to see the damage i've done
Sweet lover, you should've come over
Oh, love well i'm waiting for you

Lover, you should've come over
'Cause it's not too late
