Pondering...

...how I define myself in terms of interactions with other people. Like if there was no one else in this world, I wouldn't be able to determine who I am.

If there were no one else in the world but you, it would be easy to determine who you are. You would be everyone.

Yes!!! Something I've been insisting for years. There is no "real" you. You have a set of personal characteristics that are modified by the people you interact with and every interaction is different, so you're a different person to everyone you interact with.

You can be in love with someone who makes you act wonderfully or with someone who brings out the absolute worst in you. You're in love not only with them but with the version of "you" they produce. (explore it in fiction!)

A human being alone is not a human being. He's an aberration. We're literally social animals.

:)

You get it. And the sentence above reminds me of something I wrote way back when (Aug, 2004!)

Just once

To live just once
Inside my head
Where darkness implodes
on itself...

Where I look closely
at myself
Hating the total
worthlessness

To see just once
Through your eyes
Where beauty reigns
absolute...

Where I fall in love
once again
With all that is
purely me.

Languages. Why the sound of a woman speaking French is so alluring. Why the sound of a woman coming defies linguistics...

As an offshoot of Selena's optimism thread, I'm pondering force. Resistance, in particular, and how it drains my energy. The amount of force required just to hold my position against assault of any kind is directly related to my willingness to continue to invest myself.

In emotional terms, my mother provides a good example. It just took too damned much energy for me to maintain my "self" in the face of her onslaught of expectations and judgments and you'd-be-better/happier-this-way proclamations. I decided that energy would be better spent on forward momentum instead of wasted justifying myself to her. I moved on. Moved past. Created emotional distance.

In physical terms, I point to my ex-husband and sleeping. We were never compatible sleepers. I would have to exert force -- resistance -- just to maintain a comfortable sleeping position against his weight. Needless to say, that's not conducive to restful sleep. Physical distance was required in order to achieve healthy sleep.

These are extreme examples, but I see the patterns in other aspects of my life, and I wonder ...

Why people put up with and make excuses for and forgive the people who hurt them and then let it happen again.
What inner demon makes a person willing to let others walk all over them with no consequence, even promote it?
Where do you get the strength to make it stop?

When I was in training as a military social worker (yes, there is such a thing) one of the visiting instructors was an MSW with a private counseling practice in San Francisco. Yeah, I was stationed in SF in the '70's.

I'll never forget the thrust of his ideas. Adulthood is defined by autonomy. It's a somewhat extential approach, i.e., you are resposible for the decisions you make and all the consequences thereof. It doesn't say that everything that happens to you is your "fault" because things happen that you don't choose. However, whenever you make a choice, you should do it conciously and will full appreciation that there will be consequences. The consequences will be either good or bad and that isn't what's important. What's important is that you made the choice and knew what you were doing.

"There was nothing, she was now lost to me and I couldn’t console her. How do you console the inconsolable? How do you console Satan or God? Or any other demon or angel for that matter because that’s how we felt, her and I, like two anomalies that brought about pain and destruction in the balance of nature. It was time again for another rematch with God. A no glove and no holds barred sparring match set in the arena of my soul. I wanted for one brief and shining moment to best him/her in a battle of wits.

Oddly enough it was Debby that consoled me at this time and I allowed her to do it to me, without hesitation or sarcasm. I let my sister do what she did best, pray for me and set me on the pathway to revelation and healing."
