I've been noticing the past few years that the political vitriol is getting worse and worse. People need only look at some of the topics on this board to see how the mudslinging doesn't even cover issues of debate anymore...it's just namecalling against the other side. At what point do we as a society need to stop encouraging such extremism and start trying to actually work together instead of taking such hard line stances?

I think it's much better than it had been in prior cycles.

It's not going to end. It's of interest to people.

Yup, the political climate is more brutal now than ever.

First we need to work on sentence structure. How can we reach a consensus on grave political matters if we can't keep verb tense straight within a single sentence?yes this is pointless snark

These used to be called "wars" and now it's just "arguing."

Historical advantage - us.

How about British Parliament? Just because an insult begins with "the Right Honourable" doesn't mean that it's not an insult.

People should take a look and see that under Pax Americana, Europe has had its first 50 year peace in ever.

Then they should thank us, send me money and you their first born.

You're either totally ignorant of the history of political debate...

...or just a simple socialist still waiting for the world to buy you a Coke.

Tell that to the Yugoslavians.

Nuclear weapons = diplomatic options otherwise unavailable in history.

I submit that the creation of nuclear weapons + free speech led directly to the creation of shock jocks.

"I can't shoot at you, but I sure as hell can say whatever I want."

Can I put the first born up for adoption and take the cash?

Does anyone remember duels for honor? Sorry new guy but you brought a topic you show no knowledge of. Don't be put off. Most of us made rookie mistakes. Keep trying. Maybe post to threads rather than starting one.

You know, while much of the physical violence (civil war, duels) has been mentioned....those were all pre-1900s. And while there has ALWAYS been a share of mudslinging, I'm talking about more recently (post-regan).

People want to be so patronizing, yet are proving exactly what I'm talking about in the first place. Immediately with the mudslinging, instead of actually talking about the issue. Thank you for being such a great example.

Edit: "First we need to work on sentence structure. How can we reach a consensus on grave political matters if we can't keep verb tense straight within a single sentence?yes "

Ah yes...let's try to be witty and condesending at the same time while completely missing the topic. As if everyone on the internet is an Oxford scholar in english... Really, are you that dumb or just trying to play the role?

Tell that to the Yugoslavians.

Were they Europeans to the Europeans? How big was that war and what happened to those who broke the peace?

Oh, they got bombed into submission and tried for crimes against humanity. I remember now, never mind. Broke the peace of America and got thumped and hanged. (and yes, America had to debate whether to bother or not, as did Rome with the Achean war a few day earlier.)

I don't think you're citing research or offering anything interesting to the general comment that people talking hurt your ears.

Why wouldn't I be both witty and condescending? I can spell it at least.

People stop and look at car wrecks but most drive past a car lot....just sayin :)

If you cannot discern the point of the post you so disparage, you are not worth any more of my time. It was on-topic and exactly what your opening post deserved.

Your theory has some holes, but nothing we can't logic out in a few lit posts.

You want to turn freely donated kids into cash? Slaver!

Well, I've played Civilization. You know who I have to talk to? Someone that can beat the crap out of me or irradiate my farmland. You know who gets invaded? People who can't beat the crap out of me or irradiate my farmland.

Let's just call it distributed domesticity.

You could have said that in the first place. You would still be wrong. It's nothing new even if you use that start date.
