Point me to the thread

What it means is that he has genuine approval from a majority of the American public, and that drives the people who disagree with his policies crazy. It's not any more complicated than that.

And that in a nutshell is why there is so much vocal and mean-spirited dialoge on this board between Americans. Policies are swinging more to the right and those who are left of center are none too pleased about it.

You are being so polite to the GBs drama queen;)

I can be called all the nasty names there are but I will remain a lady. ~smiling back at you my friend~

lol problem child sorry

thinking back that was rather a bad analogy i made ... i mean that whole war of independence thing that happened :)

but i do think that tony blair would never get the kind of support that a president would get even though a vast majority of people voted for him

do you think that the way british and american people see politics is somehow different ?

Not a criticism.

You began this thread with a pointed observation of other countries bashing your own, and its politics. Now you say that there is "vocal and mean-spirited dialoge" between Americans on these boards. Are you saying that it's ok for Americans to bash Americans and America, but people from other countries don't have that right?

I know you did not ask me but, I do not see a big difference in how Brits and Americans view their respective governments. I think there are detractors as well as those who are not, on both sides of the Atlantic.

Let's not forget where we derived our government and what nation we are indebted to for that. ~smile~

I'm not really up on exactly how popular Blair is at the moment, but my general feeling is that he's fairly popular but taking a lot of heat at the moment for his strong support of Bush. Is that not about right? I mean, if there was an election tomorrow, he would be re-elected easily, no?

I think one of the main differences between the US and UK is that you guys can remove a sitting Prime Minister more easily through a vote of confidence than we can through an impeachment and trial.

Because of that, I think that americans may possibly have more of an attitude of, "Well, we elected this dope, and we're stuck with him for at least four years, so we might as well try and support him."

This DOES NOT mean that most of the time there is not a LARGE and VOCAL minority that is constantly criticizing almost everything as sitting president does. Every president has to deal with it. Soem are more popular than others, but we have a very well-balanced political system, and that makes it very stable which is a good thing.

This thread got way off track a long time ago, Freya. No, I do not say nor have I ever said that bashing Americans by Americans was tolerable either. But as you have seen, it is just as common, if not more so. I don't engage in it. So the premise of my entire thread is now a moot point. ~smile~

Yeah, I think you picked the hottest topic for this place - politics of one country vs another. :)

Putz Crud

WOW!!!!!!!

Didya think of that all by your LONESOME?

Didya have help, RAINMAN?

That was a good one.

Yeah, go figure... Read some of p_p_man's thread and they don't get near the attention this one did. His are usually alot more vicious than I, personally, have been here. I don't understand that. And my intent was not to ever bash anyone, anywhere. The point is pretty clear. He and a few others come here and start threads that are derogatory to America. It does get old to see that constantly.

In the States the President is both the head of government and head of state this is not true in the UK and many other countries. The PM is just the head of government and someone else, some type of monarch or elected figurehead, is the head of state.

Many people might find it easier to criticize someone who is just the head of government and does not symbolicly represent your country.

thanks that does make sense

blair would be elected easy but partly because our 2nd party is in danger of becoming our 3rd party i think at the moment blair gets more flak about his home policys rather then foreign ones

education transport and NHS are the biggest topics in british politics at the moment

thank you that is what i meant ... but like problem child said im not naive enough to think that there is no criticizing of the president and im also not saying that american politics doesn't work ... obviously both systems can work

Do you think that people here just sort of accept him as a constant presence, and don't bother getting upset over what he says? I don't read his threads, so I have no idea what goes on in them, but I get the impression that since his shtick never changes, people just tend to disregard him.

That's about right. The only people that he really upsets anymore are newbies who stumble in here and can't believe what he's saying.

The rest of us just slap him in the head a couple of times and move on to the next thing.

Yes, I believe you might very well be correct.
