Playground Mishap

:( Oh no! Sending very positive thoughts to Bel, his wife, daughter and son. What a thing for a family to go through! :rose:

*sigh* I hate emergency room trips with kids. Best of luck to dad and daughter.

Whoa shit.

Bel take a deep breath and try to relax, I know it's traumatic for you but she'll come through okay. (I swear kids bones are made of some strange type of elastomer that heals incredibly.)

Believe me when I say that you will remember this more than she does.

Now how in the hell did she manage a Proximal RU Fracture? She decide she was superwoman and dive off the Swings? (Actually Radial Ulnar Fractures aren't that uncommon in kids, although usually they're Distal or near the wrist from trying to stop a fall.)

Cat

P.S. Keep the cast when it comes off and use it to remind her later. (I saw a guy leaving the hospital today with the Hi to Toes Cast his son had worn.)

If we knew what hospital we could all send flowers- but for now :rose: x12!

Hang tight Big guy, she will bounce back and think its cool.
Been their twice with Cat at age 4 and 9, now she things its a great idea to break a leg so they can use two different colours to make her fiberglass cast! NOT!

She will make out fine, trust me!

I'm home...My wife is doing the night shift. I was at Children's Hospital for eleven hours...My daughter is resting now.

She was walking behind the swings to take her turn and either miscalculated the speed or distance a boy was swinging or else he moved farther back on the backswing or something...it was an older boy, considerably bigger than my lil Diva. They collided HARD and she went flying and put out her arms to break her fall. At least one theory is that the initial injury happened at impact and then when she landed that way....well, then it got worse.

The two bones in her left forearm sheared completely away from the elbow and moved within her arm. I can't remember exactly what they called the fracture, but it was a very severe one and was in the worst of the three classes they use.

I had a hard time controlling my emotions when I saw the X-Rays. It was nasty. And I am not a queasy person. I am VERY very proud of my little one and how brave she was through the whole ordeal...

There were no breaks in the skin and she was able to move and feel all her fingers.

They took her into surgery and were able to manuever the bones into place without having to open up her elbow with an incision. They inserted three pins to keep the bones in place. There is no apparant nerve damage at this time. Dr. Wallace was very pleased with the results of the surgery. He said it went as well as he could have hoped considering the severity of the injury and that if all goes well in the recovery process she should have 90-95% of her range of motion in the elbow and full use and feeling in her hand.

She has been sleeping ever since the surgery, except when the doctors have awoken her to make sure she can still feel and move all her fingers. She has already decided on a mix of pink, purple and green in her cast when they put more fiberglass on in about a week.

We are going to have to postpone her Birthday Party that was scheduled for Sat. and we will miss some ballgames. However, our season ticket rep with the Padres is not only going to credit our account for the missed games but said he would try his damndest to get her the Lunchbox they are giving out to kids on Sunday that she so desperately wants. Mostly I am mentioning that because someone should recognize it when a corporation/employee shows caring and understanding.

All in all, I feel rather blessed. This could have been a hell of a lot worse.

I need to take a moment and thank everyone who has sent such love, not only here but in other forms and formats as well, be it email, phone, text or "Hello Kitty!" plushes and balloons...

I'd do it individually, but I guess I'll have to leave y'all with an IOU for now...too tired to be that coherent...

Glad she's doing okay, Bel and I hope you're getting some well deserved rest, now. Keeping you all in my prayers! :rose:

When you mentioned the general anaesthesia, it brought back my similar experience with my son's emergency appendectomy a few years back. A Numbingly scary few hours for parents. Glad to hear that (worst) part is over, anyway.

There is nothing so frightening as taking your child to the emergency room.

So happy to hear she's doing well, brave just like her daddy, it seems.

:rose: :rose: :rose:

Oh Bel, Im glad to hear there wasnt any blood, for your daughters sake. I think that freaks them out more.

Gentle hugs for your daughter and big strong ones for you!
Be patient with her as it heals- they tend to use it as a weapon once they know it wont hurt when the hit someone with it! lol Trying to make you smile- did it work?

C

mega love and healing vibes to the little one and some for dad as well. youse guys are in our thoughts.

It's great news that she did so well in the surgery. The fact that they were able to move the bones without opening up the arm is fantastic. I'm so happy to hear that all went so well. :rose:

Bel, good to hear that things went well, it's always nice to get good news.

Best wishes for a speedy recovery.

They say with kids, as long as the two broken parts are in the same room, healing will happen.

Prayers anyway. She must be scared and in pain.

Now the e-mail from Bel makes sense.... I got the after but none of the orginial....

Kisses for the little one and prays for a speedy recovery are on the way... Get you a double shot of something strong and some sleep.... you are probably in worse shape than she is.... :D

Good point TxRad! They say saving the victim is the easy part. Making sure that the parents survive is tough.
