for the record, it doesn't have to have the copyright symbol on it to be copyrighted. if that were the case, simple editing and/or cropping would make copyrights absolutly useless for pictures, paintings, and images.

Well, seeing as I been involved before for the copyright *legally*... the case brought out.. was that if it didn't have the copyright on the picture (anywhere).. there was nothing that could be done. cropping/photo editing/whatever. nobody can tell where a pic comes from, what kind of editing was done to it, etc..

Incorrect. Legally, a photo does not have to bear a copyright to be copyrighted, any more than a story has to specify "copyrighted by author" to be a copyrighted work.

Every photo you see out there cost someone money. Someone paid a photographer and a model for those photos.

We've recently been served cease & desist notices by photographers who owned photos which Lit members posted in threads. Every photo you see on the Net (with the rare exception of certain very very old unwoned photos which may be in the publid domain - these are few) is copyrighted. Unless you took the pic, you don't own the copyright, and thus we'd rather you played it safe and didn't upload it to our server.

that is such bullshit and you know it. unless the actual case is a dispute over the ownership of an image, painting, or photo, it's damn easy to tell where an image, photo, or painting came from if it's been copyrighted.
