I don't think there is a much of a difference and had never given it thought until I read this question. But I would say in my mind one could consider group sex a "planned event" an an orgy something that could happen spontaneously. Happily I have been in both situations over the years.

Someone once told me sex involving more than 2 people can be considered group sex.

Orgy status is reached when the numbers reach 5 and greater.

I've also heard the explanation about an orgy being something where guys outnumber the ladies, but no one could explain lesbian orgies, or gay orgies where there are only thrusting peni present.
I don't think the dude to lady ratio has anything to do with orgy qualification. I believe it's a numbers thing, with no regard for gender or sexual orientation.

This sounds like it is the most accurate. The only thing I would add is that Group Sex typically describes any situation with three or more participants, whereas an orgy involves more. I'm not sure how many more, but I just see more bodies when I picture an orgy.

To me, group sex is 3 to maybe 6 people, where you know the people you are playing with. This is what I enjoy. An orgy is a large number of random people, which puts me in mind of a large number of sex parts, but not actual people. No, I'll go the group route thank you.

I am going to say in my mind they are different. However it could be like a square and a rectangle thing. All squares are rectangles but not all rectangles are squares.

So, all orgies are group sex, but not all group sex are orgies.

I would define "Group Sex" as more than 2 people having sex.

Now I also think the number of people matters. Is 3 people having sex an orgy? Is 4? Others have mentioned 5 or more. I am willing to accept that. 4 seems too small to be considered an Orgy. Threesome, Foursome, Orgy. Sounds good.

I am not sure of a difference. We have been in 3somes to large house parties or real big parties. Never really thought about what to call it other than having a lot of fun. I tend to agree. Group sex is anything with more than two people. Orgy implies large crowd with little or no control over what happes with whom. A orgy can include all or a few types of group sex as listed above.

I think group sex would be more organized, even if it was spontaneous. It could be a threesome, more some, swapping partners, or even one person taking on multiple partners.
