A seemingly lifeless shuttle flew through space.

Inside, all was black and silent. Suddenly, the lights of a droid flicked on, accompanied with some blipping noises. The little droid whirred across the tiny shuttle to the mainframe computer, where, upon its arrival, the droid extended out a tiny metallic rod which slid into the computer's access hole and turned the entire thing on with a slight buzz.

WELCOME TO THE MAINFRAME.

Check. One, two. Can you hear us? This is what will be the last log entry of this flight. The flight of the Hope, the first ship sent off the rapidly dying Earth, has encountered an alien space craft, with hostile intent. Shields are running low. Energy is already depleted. The ship can do nothing to escape. We are preparing to eject emergency safety shuttles... which is where you are. Good luck, and may the human race never die.

BEGINNING...

OOC: So there you go. Anyone want to jump in on a sci-fi, new world, maybe hostile aliens-type thread? I will be taking the role of the Sentient: Robots with the ability to think much like a human to adapt to situations which require it. Not to mention them being a war machine uncapable of feeling pain or fear. Hehehehe.

Oh, and another thing: remember, the humans would be chosen for a REASON to be in the escape shuttle, with the intention of starting up a new colony in the world. Therefore they are likely to have some sort of vital role for that sort of thing. Give it a bit of thought before you jump in.

Orion Swanson

The lethargy slowly retreated and his senses awakened one after the other. Orion blinked his eyes waking up from the cryogenic sleep and patiently waiting for the awakening sequence to run its course. It wouldn't do to jump out of the capsule with still half-frozen limbs now, would it? He closed his eyes again, listening to the droning voice of the computer interface describing the thawing process of his capsule.

OOC: Hope you don't mind me jumping in Dark. If you're not happy with the post, let me know and I'll edit it out. By the way, are the 4 human characters aware of what has happened to the ship, or they are going to find everything out?

OOC: Nope, that's fine. I was beginning to think no-one was interested in this.

Uh, that's right, the humans don't know anything about what happened. The last thing they would remember is falling into their cryogenic sleep after the Hope had just left Earth. They knew nothing about the attack, or their jettison in the emergency ship.

IC: One moment the inside of XR-826's head was silent, the next a babble of computer jargon was filling it as his senses became aware.
Ah, the feeling of the human senses - an ability not found in normal droids. But such was the life of the Sentient.
He was a pre-type model of a design of robots who could feel and think as close to a human as anything that had come before - except designed to not to feel pain or fear, to make them the ultimate warriors.
Slowly the silent hunk of metal stood to its full height, 6'5", it's scanners sweeping out the shuttle. The humans were beginning to awaken.
"My computer tells me it is the year 2436. I must be malfunctioning." it said in a tinny voice as it made its way over to the main ship's computer, his eyes now flicking over the information the Personal Helper droid had accessed on the main computer.
"Good God..." the Sentient muttered under its non-existing breath.

Orion Swanson

The glass pane of Orion's cryogenic unit slides open silently and he steps out of it, stretching his arms and back. He walks to the opposite wall and opens a locker with his name on it taking out a white and red jumpsuit which he slips over his naked frame.

He looks over the other cryogenic units and the still sleeping forms lying there and walks to the computer interface to check their status. That's when he sees the last log flashing on the screen and the date of its posting sends him reeling backwards.

Almost 400 years! He had slept for almost half a millenium and they were now god knows where near a planet which, for all they knew, could not support any life, with three of the remaining crew still asleep and no clue as to when they would wake up.

Orion sat down heavily in a chair, holding his head in his hands. 'Get a grip on yourself Swanson!' He whispered to himself harshly. 'This is what you have been trained for, this is what you are good at, so get a grip!'

He looked up at the sound of the cryo-chamber's door sliding open to see the Sentient coming in.

XR-826

After reading the message, the Sentient turned his head to see the form of Orion, who he had not noticed when he first entered the room.
"Strange... I did not notice you, Orion Swanson. I see you have read the log. It is very troubling." the Sentient's eyes flicked to an overhead monitor, which was displaying some sort of error in the awakening process of the other cryogenic units. The Sentient turned to the computer, immediately tapping in a few keys, which displayed a red "error" symbol and a message saying that there was computing problems with the cryogenics system, and then, in smaller, blinking words underneath, "OVER-RIDE NECCESSARY".
The Sentient turned to the Personal Helper Droid, which was currently checking over another part of the computer.
"Droid... SV-89103. Your presence is required." the Sentient spoke, and the little droid blipped in response, making its way back to the main computer terminal, where it quickly hooked in and began its work.
"It appears that the other cryogenic units may not be opened for some time. It is estimated that the shuttle shall land on Onaedul VI in 9.04 minutes. As the most senior officer that is fully operational, you have temporary captain's rights. Do you wish to enter manual flight mode?" The Sentient babbled to Orion.

Orion Swanson

"Damn those cryogenic units!" Orion blurts out not able to contain his frustration. "There's never anything that works correctly when you need it!"

He walks around the room trying to calm himself down. 'It's nothing dire,' he says to himself, 'we are almost 400 years older, none of the others seem to want to wake up yet and we are about to land on a possibly alien planet... Things could be worse!'

He stops in the middle of the room and turns towards the Sentient. "What did you say? Temporary Captain? Manual Flight? Are we THAT close???" He runs back to the monitor and sees that he only has a few minutes to make up his mind.

"Well I guess we might as well land and then assess the situation from there. And hopefully the Captain will have awakened by then."

XR-826

"Probability of cryogenic systems over-ride succeeding by that time are... 23.46%." XR-826 told Orion as he deciphered the beeps and blips coming from the droid attending to the computer.
"It appears that the atmospheric sample has been analyzed completely. Probability of atmosphere supporting human life is 98.73%." XR-826 spoke as he looked over the various screens of the computer. "Probability of alien life is uncomputable. It is the Sentient's mission to make the first examination. Preparing weapons systems and long-range scanners. Arrival in approximately 3.45 minutes." the Sentient hummed as it turned on its internal weapons systems and long range scanners, moving towards the entrance to the tiny shuttle.
"Long-range scanners pick up no detectable life forms." The robot spoke.
