one of the san antonio tv stations has a "brain teaser" feature during their morning news. a trivia question, if you will. this morning's question was what is the oldest candy still being manufactured in the usa today. the answer was necco wafers. that's a candy i remember from my childhood that many of you have probably have never heard of.

my question is, what do you think is the oldest type of candy still being manufactured but not under a brand name. ie, taffy, caramel, etc.

that would definitely be my guess. have you ever made any. i remember my mother used to take a cardboard quart milk container, cut the top off and wash it out. then you heated enough water to fill it, disolve as much sugar as you possibly could, add a little food coloring and pour it in. then you tied some sewing thread to a popsicle stick, weighted it with a button and drop it in. in a few days (way too many if i remember correctly) you'd have this great candy.

man, that came back really strong and detailed. cool.

anyway, peppermint and horehound are two more oldies that could be in the running as the oldest.

anybody else got a guess?

How about maple sugar? The indians used to boil the sap from the maple trees to make it!

i was thinking more of something you could hold in your hand but that would definitely be one of the oldest sweets. now you've got me wondering if they made anything else out of it like sugar cubes or something something of that nature.

damn, something else to spend time searching for.:D

do you remember the old music movie (maybe for kids, not sure) where they make candy... I've just got one scene in my head... people were visiting the candy plant and you could see all those wonderful candy, kids were singing and dancing and making noice with a candy kind of flute.

anyone can find me the title?

I keep thinking it was from Chitty Chitty Bang Bang ............ the suckers were coming out with holes and they disovered you could play music with them. The sng was "Toot Sweet" or something like that.

Thank you

I will check those two titles "Willy Wonka and the Chocolate factory" and "Chitty Chitty Bang Bang".
