"Gosh, that's easy MJR. All you do is stick the W98 CD in the drive and follow the instructions!"

Yeah, that's what I thought too.

Don't work.

Sure, made lots of whoosh CD Rom drive noises and clickety hard drive noises but the end result was exactly the same as my updated w98, including the manky patch that is fucking up my PC. The only difference is I have some crap back on my desktop that I'd previously deleted.

What I need to do is re-install windows so that it is the same as it was when it was first installed.

How?

I need your help folks!

:)

rename from dos the file win.com to win.old its in windows/system

and then rename the windows folder to windows.old

then install windows otherwise you're just installing windows over your old folder

if anything go's wrong you can just go back and rename the files back to what they used to be

(i could be wrong but not sure if you have to rename another file too)

You'll need a start up disk.

Go into your BIOS and have the CD-ROM selected as a boot device.

1) Go to the shops.
2) Buy a Mac.
3) Live happily ever after.

5... 4... 3... 2... 1... Duck, Roll, Run :D

P.S. Did I say I love Macs today?

(Look, you KNOW I'm going to make a post like this on threads like this. It's part of the crusade... *lol*)

[edited to add: Cool AV MJR ;) ]

Ok. Im assuming that you have backed up all the sensitive data such as your music or porn collection and you have made Windows start up floppy disk.
Here we go.
Restart your computer.
Right after POST (power on self test) press F8.
Select "Command Prompt Only" option.
Type in Format c: \s

WARNING, ALL DATA ON NON-REMOVABLE DISK
DRIVE C: WILL BE LOST!
Proceed with Format (Y/N)?

type Y and press Enter

after it's done it will ask you to enter a name for the drive you can name it or leave it along.

Restart.
Slide in Windows floppy disk and CD-ROM
Select "Start computer with CD-ROM drivers"
When it get's done reading you will be left with:
A:\
type in CD E:
This part is a little tricky since start up disk make a RAM drive and if you got standard computer set up i.e 1 Hard Drive, 1 CD Drive letter of CD drive will by one step higher so your D: drive will be E:

when you found letter of your CD drive type in
E:\setup

and enjoy the ride

Not entirely true. Unless he has labeled and used a B: drive he's ok. Windows uses the "B:" drive when using a start up disk.

I heard a wonderful quote the other day (well I think it's wonderful, ok?)

"Linux is only free if your time is worth nothing."
