Obama's speech on race

I'd like to see Bush even read that speech let alone sound believable. If nothing else Obama Sounds like a person I'd want to vote for. Way better than that Village Idiot, dubya.

Neither Party deserves to be rewarded with a President in office. Vote Libertarian.
Again, Bush isnt running for president, he already has the job.

An excellent and eloquent speech in all respects.

But lest we forget, the substance of the current controversy can be reduced to a single sentence with two parts: "To what degree do the extremist views of Pastor Wright reflect your own political views, and if they are not representative of your philosophy, why affiliate with and support the pastor and/or the church over the course of several decades?"

The Senator has previously answered the first part of the question by unequivocally agreeing as to the extreme nature or inappropriateness of the pastor's latest comments and assuring us that they do not reflect his (O'Bama's) views.

As to the second part of the question, O'Bama has suggested that, on balance, such extreme statements by the pastor were not reflective of the character of the man he knew or the sermons he heard and that his affiliation with the church and its pastor was therefore consistent with his own philosophy.

In his speech today, Senator O'Bama directly addressed the substance of the current controversy in little more than two paragraphs:

"I have already condemned, in unequivocal terms, the statements of Reverend Wright that have caused such controversy. For some, nagging questions remain. Did I know him to be an occasionally fierce critic of American domestic and foreign policy? Of course. Did I ever hear him make remarks that could be considered controversial while I sat in church? Yes. Did I strongly disagree with many of his political views? Absolutely – just as I’m sure many of you have heard remarks from your pastors, priests, or rabbis with which you strongly disagreed.

"But the remarks that have caused this recent firestorm weren’t simply controversial. They weren’t simply a religious leader’s effort to speak out against perceived injustice. Instead, they expressed a profoundly distorted view of this country – a view that sees white racism as endemic, and that elevates what is wrong with America above all that we know is right with America; a view that sees the conflicts in the Middle East as rooted primarily in the actions of stalwart allies like Israel, instead of emanating from the perverse and hateful ideologies of radical Islam."

Although, he attempted to leave himself a bit of "wiggle room" regarding what he heard and when he heard it, I was pleased that Senator O'Bama continues to frame the pastor's remarks in essentially the same terms as he over the past few days.

That is, that such remarks are not merely controversial, they are unacceptable and intolerable BECAUSE they represent a "distorted view" of this country.

Any questions as to what Senator O'Bama actually believes were well addressed in his speech today. But questions as to why he would so closely align himself with such a divergent and discordant voice will continue and increase in difficulty should additional statements be unearthed from Rev. Wright that sink to the level of intolerability that Senator O'Bama has already implied.

But the time for such discovery is quickly running out. The "legs" for this story grow shorter and slower with each passing day.

Well the other day he said he never heard these controversial remarks from the Reverend while he was in church. Now today he comes back and says he did. Seems like he lied initially. It's out there, he lied.

He did not lie. He said that he had heard Wright make some controversial remarks, but that he was not present to hear the particular remarks that all this feigned outrage is about.

Excellent speech. This is one of his biggest strengths. This will pretty effectively put this episode behind him. Oh, there will be the BB types and such that will try to nip at his heels with it, but that's about it. I wonder if this is the best his opponents can do at this point.

Preachers say a lot of dumb things. I wouldn't expect people to jump ship like some think O'bama should. He can see through the flaws that all of us have to some degree for the good in people. He's a good irish lad like that. :)

But, he's a Democrat! He's supposed to wring his hands and denounce every controversial statement ever made by any Democrat, liberal, leftist and anti-war activist in America. He is also personally responsible for everything ever said by his friends, neighbors, storekeepers who've sold things to him and anyone who sort of looks like him.

Now, if he was, say, John McCain, he could stand on a stage and hug bigots all day and no one would hold it against him.

Like I said, bush was reamed into an apology for giving a speech a Bob Jones U, but we are supposed to overlook the possible ramifications a twenty year close association with a church led by an anti-American black racist. I smell a double standard Pooks.

Because a black person espousing an opinion, and an institution actively discriminating against people because of their race is the exact same thing, right?

He did in fact lie.

Mr. Davis stands by his story that during one of the services he attended during the month of July, Senator Obama was present and sat through the sermon given by Rev. Wright as described in the story. Mr. Davis said Secret Service were also present in the church during Senator Obama's attendance.

Contrary to Senator Barack Obama’s claim that he never heard his pastor Jeremiah A. Wright, Jr. preach hatred of America, Obama was in the pews last July when the minister blamed the “white arrogance” of America’s Caucasian majority for the world’s suffering, especially the oppression of blacks. In his press release, Obama claimed, “The statements that Rev. Wright made that are the cause of this controversy were not statements I personally heard him preach while I sat in the pews of Trinity, or heard him utter in private conversation.”

In fact, Obama was present in the South Side Chicago church on July 22 last year when Jim Davis, a freelance correspondent for Newsmax, attended services along with Obama. In his sermon that day, Wright tore into America, referring to the “United States of White America” and lacing his sermon with expletives as Obama listened. Hearing Wright’s attacks on his own country, Obama had the opportunity to walk out, but Davis said the senator sat in his pew and nodded in agreement.

The burden of proof is not you, not me, If you are going to state that Obama lied, lay it on the table.
He lied. You're telling me, after a 20 year relationship he never heard his hate speeches until recently? He never sat in the church, he was never told of those speeches?? Smells real bad to me....

Oh, so he's an anti-American black racist now. Excellent. I so love the smell of extreme partisan rhetoric in the evenings. It's so invigorating. *nods*

Excuse me, I am discussing this issue with Vetteman, an honorable man I disagree with, not with some slimy racist puke.

I've been wondering when all the nonsensical demonizing would start. They just can't help it! It's going to be an interesting election year. :D

That much is for certain. The shit flinging in the general election should be interesting as well.

He never denied that he had heard Wright make some controversial remarks. The issue is whether or not he teleported himself from Florida to Chicago on a particular Sunday. If you believe he has mastered time and space in order to be in two places at once, then by all means, consider him a liar.

LOL Ish, even you couldn't quote Newsmax as trustworthy under your own name. LMAO.

Pretty soon, the conservatives are all going to be in favor of hate speech laws, so they can use them against these uppity black folk.
