"Stay calm and remember that most bears do not want to attack you; they usually just want to be left alone. Don’t we all? Identify yourself by making noise so the bear knows you are a human and not a prey animal. Help the bear recognize you as a human. We recommend using your voice. (Waving and showing off your opposable thumb means nothing to the bear) The bear may come closer or stand on its hind legs to get a better look or smell. A standing bear is usually curious, not threatening."
P.S. I apologize to any “friends” who were brought on a hike as the “bait” or were sacrificed to save the group. You will be missed.

It was kinda gray today. I got out on the bike before dinner and just wasn't feeling it. I did the race through the adjacent 'hood down the hill and ground back up about 1000 feet. I was glad I wore a hat under my helmet and a jacket.

When I first bought the house I live in now, there were a couple/three teens who would walk down the block once a week with small bore rifles and wearing backpacks while heading off into the brush.
They'd come back a few hours later looking dusty and tired but the backpacks were looking fuller than when they went by the first time.
They moved out of state a few decades ago as the gun laws here tightened and people started getting scared of seeing people with guns.
