finally, someone else who understands how amazing that band is! they've been my favourite for years now. i haven't heard all of Kid A yet, but i've got some live tracks and a couple of studio ones, and i'm really digging it so far. i'm not sure how i feel about Treefingers, and they took all of the guitars out of Motion Picture Soundtrack, but i love How to Disappear Completely and Never Be Found
okay, okay, i'm gushing a bit...
but dammit, it comes out on TUESDAY!!!!
and guess who's going to hear them in concert on October 17th?
I heard they'd gone all electronic with this album. Is it drastically different to their older stuff?
Nah, there's lots of guitars still - even a rather long, obnoxious metal-esque solo in one song. It's an interesting album (available for download on Napster, for anyone who's interested). It's not as good as the last one, but it's worth buying if you're a fan. The version of Motion Picture Soundtrack on the album is not as good as the live versions I've downloaded, IMHO.
BTW, has anyone here heard the new Dandy Warhol's single "Bohemian Like You"? Fucking hell, it's good! Killer cool video as well...
Shila: "Video killed the radio star."
I know that one..
Laurel: "*slaps forehead*
Only one of the greatest bands ever in history!
If they're so great why haven't I heard of them before?
"Hey, are you Never Again also?"
Whom?
By the by, have you seen 'Not the Never' around lately? I've been missing her something fierce. I'm offering a reward of twenty whacks with a wet noodle to the one you finds the kidnapped.
But Nicole luv I was meaning JAMES the band formed in Manchester, U.K. have you heard of them ?
May your mind be wide open
May your heart beat strong
May your minds will be broken
By this heartfelt song
Arriba!
May your mind set you free (Be opened by the wonderful)
May your heart lead you on
May your mind let you be through all disasters (be opened by the wonderful)
May your heart lead you on (may your heart lead you on)
May your eyes let you see through all disasters (be opened by the wonderful)
May your heart lead you on (may your heart lead you on)
(May your mind let you be opened by the wonderful)
Set you free (May your heart lead you on)
i have to say... i think Kid A shows just how much Radiohead have grown. i think it's their best album (though it isn't my favourite). it's easily the most musically intricate (and topping OK Computer in that respect was tough), melodically experimental, and cohesive album in their collection. (the second most cohesive is, of course, OK Computer).
i still think The Bends is close to being the best album of all time. Kid A is better, but further from the "best album of all time" title. go figure.
i miss the rhythm shifts, though. Kid A's songs tend to get into a groove and stay there. granted, they DO groove, and they do it well...
well, they couldn't very well put Motion Picture Soundtrack on the album with just bare guitar chords! that would have been SO The Bends!
i have to agree with Svedish_Chef in that the My Iron Lung single (eight, count 'em, EIGHT tracks) rules. not my favourite, but it rules. i'm big on Lewis: Mistreated.
here's what i think, concisely, for anyone who cares:
Pablo Honey was a garage band album, The Bends was an angst-rock album, OK Computer was a concept album (as was Airbag/How Am I Driving?) and Kid A is a musical album. None of these things is bad in any way, shape, or form.
Kid A, the new album has drifted into a definate daring avenue. I personally think it has a tough time in keeping a clear direction (as a concept album, not in the sense of it not being mainstream.) I congratulate them on their bravery, this is very experimental and could hopefully help open for other groups to try something different. (most of the mainstream music is soooooo boring and has been done before too many times!!!!!!)
I would like to get some more of their albums though.
OK Computer was an awesome album. (I'm a sucker for a good concept album!) The press compared that one to Pink Floyd's "Dark Side of the Moon" but I feel it has a closer relation to Alan Parsons Project's "I Robot" (Alan engineered Floyd's "Dark Side...") Similar concept on a society threatened by technology resulting in human apathy, social blandness and fear. In today's world, this makes a huge statement to the whereabouts we are heading! (I think Radiohead might be one step ahead of us all!)
I won't drag this more. Thanks to all who gave their critiques on the other albums. (I have an idea which one I'm going to get next!)
Can i suggest you actually buy Kid A? I know napsters cool but you do need to support the bands you like and of course there is the cover.
You may already know this but hidden behind the CD deck in the box is a small book thing. Inside the book is this completely weird and psychodelic narrative displayed in odd fonts with weird hand drawn thingies (vague I know but it really is weird). One section preaches about how evil Tony Blair is - completely over the top saying that he will kill your children and other such shite. Anyway, a really interesting read and not available through Napster!!
Musically, they have gone mad. Thom, when asked explained that "Melody is dead" and "rythme is the future". My opinion on this rather odd comment is that having to play Creep ten thousand times in a year has finally taken its toll.
There is some great stuff in the album and some awful stuff as well. The experimental stuff is ... well ... experimental and somewhat reminiscent of the days when the Beatles decided that acid was better than cornflakes.
Of course I'll buy it, silly! First, I have to download it from Napster to support the Napster technology and all that it represents. Then I'll buy the CD so I can read the crazy freaky artwork.
After listening Kid A a dozen or so times, I'm a little disappointed in it. It still doesn't get me like their last couple records do. Ah well...
They were amazing on SNL last Saturday on the season premiere. They performed two songs off of the new CD ... loved it! Thom Yorke is sooooooo cool!!!!
I am definitely going to buy Kid A.

The Bends is my fave (so far).
