Before we begin - let it be very clear - I have worked in the, "talent/performance industries," my entire professional life - 25 years now and I’ve seen and heard and witnessed much talent.

Talent of all kinds and quality.

There are two basic, "different kinds of talent."

Innate, "you're born with it," genetic, natural - talent. And everyone has - by degree – a small amount, to very much. Everyone has some sort, some amount - of talent or talents from which to build. It's just that some - for some reason or another - God only knows I guess – well, they excel - or have more - or something. But - it's, “natural talent,” we are talking about here.

And then there is, “acquired talent.” Fueled by personal drive. Talent accrued over time. Talent gathered and nurtured over time. Learned talent. If one remains enthused - over a long time - and continues, "to learn," - one can become more and more talented. Practice does improve upon talent. Also know that the, "personal drive thing," it can come from deep within - in a solo and seeming inexplicable fashion - or - it can come in the form of an overt and obvious - coach or parent.

And of course you can combine the two. In various ratios, depending on the individual and, "what they were born with," and "their drive to learn and improve."

Tiger Woods comes to mind. The Williams sisters. Combo’s of both innate, acquired and drive via coaches and or parents.

With all that said - my assessment of Madonna's talent is.....

35% natural innate, born-with talent…..
65% driven to perfection, learned, practiced talent…..

I actually think she and let's say - Britney - have about the same relative, "born with," talent. But Madonna has - over the years, honed her skills and built upon her meager talent – now to the point, that currently of course, Britney pales in comparison.

I can see how many would like last nights Madonna's show. It was - Col. Tom Parker, Ringling Brothers, David Copperfield, Broadway and the Pageantry of the Olympic and Millennium shows - all in one. Everything but the kitchen sink. Lot's of smoke, mirrors and sex.

Lot's of, "when you can't wow'um with talent - blind'em with bullshit."

And that's exactly what I thought of last night’s show - total and utter Bull Shit.

She can barely sing, really – you’ll notice that whenever the sound man - pulls back on the heavy vocal processing (that Vocoder shit is really annoying) - her voice cracks and falls flat. And for me, her voice lacks any real identifiable, personality.

And her dancing is about the same. Cheerleading shit – gone Broadway – add the sex.

And let's not even discuss her new - guitar playing!!!! Please. Madonna obviously approached guitar - as a prop, a cain, or a top hat. Her teacher did not teach her guitar - he choreographed it for her. She blew dead rats. I figure she thought she could, “sell it as cool,” and save her breath – not dancing. She is getting old.

She still looks pretty good I guess – but she’s no 10 to me. She keeps in shape – but who couldn’t with her army of health assistants? Makes me wonder what she like in the sack. I would guess that’s where her real talent lies.

Anyway…..

I think Madonna is, "all show and no go." All hype. Just like much of what appeals to the masses.

The day she can sit on a plain wooden bar-stool, all by herself, in one single spotlight and play the guitar, with no other instrumentation and sing us all a nice song - even one wrote for her by others - is the day I might, maybe - be able to tell you “yes” - she does have some sort of talent in there.

But I'm not holding my breath.

Madonna is like Michael Jackson....they sell lots of tickets to someone but it is hard to find someone who admits to really liking them

Oh, not so......

There a millions of people, fans - who like, love and worship these people - that is their choice.

Wether it's some WWF character, or a performer of this ilk - lots of people "really like" - the big show.

THE BIG SHOW!!!!!

I mean - look at Tractor Pulls and Monster Trucks!!!!!!

The real shame is in the thousands and thousands of truely talented folks out there - who actually can - sit on a bar stool and entertain you with genuine talent - that go totally by the wayside.

But such is the world in which we live.

i wasnt saying that there were not genuine lovers of their music....but either i have never met them or they hide the fact they are fans

I agree with you, though. Talent is sitting on a chair under a dim light withan acoustic guitar and still being entertaining

Here here Sparky

:p

i agree with you upto a point ... but what is talent ... when it comes to big concerts isnt talent being able to entertain a big audience ... i dont particular like madonna but thats just personal preference ... you have to accept shes very popular and that means she has a talent to entertain

just because someone has great talent to play an instrument or to sing ... doesnt mean that they can entertain ... i think sometimes people are too pompous about what music should be ... sometimes it should just be fun and entertaining

having said all that what entertains me most is someone that can play and can sing and write beautiful songs but i think im in the minority :)

*puts hands on hips and glares at Sparky*

I happen to like monster trucks and tractor pulls. Are you accusing me of having mass-mentality bullshit big show tacky taste? If so, well then, ththtphthpthpthphtphththththt on you. I have thoroughly exquisite taste. I happen to think that everything I choose for entertainment purposes is just absolutely divine. Why? I only have myself to please. I could care less if EBW gives my musical taste the nod. I don't really care if DCL gives a thumbs up to my taste in movies. And Sparky darlin, no offense, but I could gives a good gawd damn about your round the world clap to my taste in "big show" bullshit. Yes, it's implied with your little "monster truck equals talentless bullshit" remark.

People want to be entertained. People who spend the cash for Madonna tickets want to be entertained. They could gives a fuck if she can sing or not, they want to see the show. Madonna definately delivers. Fie on you for implying that there is something wrong with going to see that show. If they wanted to hear pure vocal talent, they'd see any one of the three tenors. If they want a show, they know whose concerts to see. People who trade on talent alone get nowhere. Joe Satriani is case in point.

Entertainment analysis, sheesh. You read waaaayyyy too much into something as face value as entertainment. It either entertains you or it doesn't. If it doesn't entertain you, then don't watch it. Putting on airs about how much frivilous bullshit one entertainer has due to lack of talent doesn't change anyone's opinion on what entertains them, nor does it change yours. All it means is that you're not bright enough to avoid the things you don't like. My opinion on Madonna's show and talent: I don't like Madonna, so I don't buy Madonna CDs or concert tickets. Why? Cause Madonna does not entertain me. I buy CDs, books, and videos that entertain me. Why? Cause there is nothing deeper in entertainment than boredom alleviation. Entertainment has no purpose beyond entertaining people. It's called entertainment for a reason. Yanni has talent, but I would guess that Yanni does not grace the uberspark's CD collection.

No one cares about talent. They care about being entertained. If Madonna does it for them, more power to them and they are not miserable human beings for joining in the big show herd mentality. Miserable human beings are those who go to things that don't entertain them and join in the snobbish herd mentality of people who have completely forgot what entertainment is all about. Entertaining people. Write that down, Sparky. The purpose of entertainment is to entertain people. Irregardless of talent, if the people were entertained, the entertainer was successfuly. I know that galls the "musical talent purist" that you are, but accept the fact that in the grand scheme of life, entertainment is just that, entertainment.

In short, Sparky, you're a snob.

Re: Oh, not so......

*rolls eyes* Jeeeeez, I just stepped out to feed the dogs in the middle of that and there it is. I typed that.

Sparky, the reason all those talented folks get nowhere? They have no talent for marketing.

She never could sing -

But it was fun to watch her fall on her ass on the rooftop at Danceteria during the New Music Seminar way back. She wasn't known yet, except as a pushy East Village climber, but she sure was funny. "Like a Virgin!" What a hoot!

Muffie's right. Entertainment is to entertain. Muffie is usually right about what she says, so I will leave her point at that.

However I have a point to make about the difference between Madonna and someone like Bob Dylan.....

Music is art, and art isn't about entertaining, though many find entertainment by it, thus resulting in the transformation of Music from an 'art form' to a 'gratification tool'. Take for example the history of Blues music. It was to express something, not to give the family a ho down opportunity (that is what ho down music arose for).

For many musicians, people who combine instrumental and vocal work, their art is about conveying things of importance to them, that remain in conflict or unspoken in society. Through history, music has been a form of communicating social contrivances, and for some, a means of telling a story to make a point, for others "Entertainment". Now, for most people who are musicians, the question about entertainment performers having more of less talent isn't an issue. We know we don't fall in the same category, so why compare. My only worry is that these folks and their fans actually think that they are musicians, and don't acknowledge the difference.

Anyway, when people become accustomed to dealing with sincere expression through music, all else fails to compare. It is hard then, for some to really see 'why' one would care more about entertainment, than the 'art' of music. I think Sparky has 'entertainment' confused with 'art' here. Madonna isn't an artist, she also isn't a musician.... she is an Entertainer.

Sparky may have been enthralled enough to watch her performance, not out of idiocy or an inability to avoid what he doesn't like, but because she has endured so long, with very little talent. Many Entertainers max out around 5 years exposure, and most are gone out of the Pop scene within 10 years. She is enduring well past that, and it is a wonder to many, because she is not talented. I wonder about it myself, but could care less to try an unravel this sociological mystery.

I'd go play my guitar now, but I have to go to school. :(

I've never been into Maddona and I don't own a single song or film by her, I always thought it was just me who didn't like her but I'm glad see I'm not alone.

wow killermuffin agreed with me ;)

although i think she said it in a more direct way :)

Never wasted $600 on seeing her concert.

I never liked her either. I put Madonna in the same category as Cher.

I liked her when I was 14. The whole Madonna craze was never about her music - it was about her whole Madonna-ness, her charisma. She made slutty fashionable.

For years she's been a trend-follower rather than a trend creator. Unlike, say, Michael Jackson ("Human Nature" is STILL a good song) Madonna's music sounds pretty dated. Heard "True Blue" lately? How about "La Isla Bonita"? They sound like 80s crap. It's embarrassing to listen to it. And all her new stuff is indistinguishable, derivative pap. She's somehow taken a 5-year career and stretched it out for nearly 20 years. THAT'S genius of some kind.

And she's a little too old to be prancing like a cheap ho'. IMHO.

Let me ask you this Laurel..........

:p

I saw it last night or some of it at least.....I did comment on "The Show"

But I still think she is sexy for some reson............................;)

Shit! You all putting words in my mouth again.

Did I ever say I did not like Monster Truck shows? Or Tractor Pulls? I'm a motor-head from way back (If only you all would read my past posts - you'd know that.) I love any "show" with cars, bikes and planes.

So of course - that would mean that I am "entertained" by those sorts of shows. But the idea of entertainment and being entertained - heavily implies, show business - this does not in the least mean that, "there must be talent present to entertain."

Just because "something sells" does not imply goodness, or talent - if so Frito's and MacBurger's would be considered gormet items. This does not mean that "massive sales of items and show business events" do not have value. Sure, if "it sells" it must have some sort of value - even if it's purely a social venom of no reason. But, but, but - it does not require talent.

As for "undiscovered talent" being undiscovered because "they don't market themselves well enough." Sure, in some cases. and in some cases, those who really believe they have talent - actually don't.

But "marketing" is the key there - not talent. You could be the greatest violin player ever, guitar player, vocalist, actor - whatever - and if you don't care to (because often artists simply don't have the ability or personality to market themselves) or don't have the money to pay someone to market you, AND, if you might not "have a marketing nitche," (let's say that maybe you are obese and have acne problems - not good for any actor, right) then - your talent will most likely go undiscovered.

Because Marketing and more importantly "what fuels marketing" - what YOU are buying - mandates "what is to be marketed."

And YOU, most of you want MacBurgers, and the WWF - over any "real talent." You prefer fake muscles or true talent with zits.

This is a fact.

Let's all get down on our knees and kiss Vince McMahon's ass and wave goodbye to Mozart. Because that's exactly what the "buying American public," is doing.

Waving true talent goodbye.

But she is sexy............................................................

Who said anything about kissing true talent goodbye? I still see it popping up everywhere.

There is room in this world for entertainers and for truly talented folks. Believe it or not.
