i graduated just 3 years ago and my brother is attending my old high school in Slidell, LA. every friday they have a video news done completly by the students. during the credits a student was called a fagot.

the credits are done on a white background. in pale yellow writing at the end of the credits this was written "DANNY SMITH IS A HOMO AND ALL FAGS SHOULD DIE AND BURN IN HELL"

the father of danny is sueing the school board to have the 3 students responsible permanently expelled.

Danny is gay. he is out and extremely open about it. he acts like a gay man in an 80s movie with the movie lisp act and look. if you saw him you would know instantly he was gay. but my question is why would his father have to sue to have the students expelled. shouldnt they be expelled instantly. i see this snowballing into a bigger problem if they arnt expelled and has the potential to be national news.

Why should the students be expelled if the film was produced by students? Unless there is some detail that I'm not aware of, then if the school is completely hands off (which I do not recommend at all), they are responsible for the content. The students are, if the case is such that filmed with thier own equipment and produced in someone basement or garage. The only way the school would be connected is as a a palce for these students to have met each other, including the victim of the homophobic slurs.

However, even if the school was involved to the slight degree that the students used school equipment, then the school bears at least a little responsibility.

My question would be though, why were the teachers and other staff not involved to the degree that this would've been prevented in the first place?

Those students along with the school administration should all be expelled for allowing it to be shown. This is a no brainer! Whether it was their equipment or the schools equipment, or whether it was made in Timbuktu, this is an outrage and an outright bashing! Duh...

answer to first post

it is a school news program for film classes and done on school property and school equipment.

Well, then there definiately should've been better supervision, so I'd say the students should be suspended, and the teachers and other staff responsible for the news content suspended even longer, or possibly fired.

And tt doesn't matter whether it was specifically homophobic or not, at least not to me. I would make the same decision and administer the same punishment if the film contained racial slurs or sexist comments. While I generally shy away from such things as preventing "hate speech," that opinion applies to adults. Kids don't have all the rights we do.

Yes, it's very curious why this boy's father would have to sue. As I said in my first post, it's almost a no brainer. I'm a teacher myself. One of our schools first rules ( in our policies & rules handbook) is if any student (or staff member) is caught doing something like this would automatically mean expulsion for the student(s) and a reprimand or some type of disciplinary action on the teacher, or staff member invovled. Going down the list of dos & don'ts in the handbook, is no words such as Faggot, Nigger, Kike, Spic, Wetback, Cracker (among many) will not be tolerated under any circumstances, whether in any written school assignment, in any public display such as a school banner, or in any journalistic format, either the school newspaper, student news over the air or in a video format. Whether it was school property or not, or whether the video was done in or outside the school has no beariig in this case anymore, because it was "allowed" to be shown in the school premises. Like brining in a handgun, knife or any type of illegal object. I agree, I can see this snowballing into something more than just scandalous, but also turning into a legal nightmare for the school district & administrators in which some heads will definitely will be rolling. This is the last thing a school district wants.
